How do you feel about people using gay/faggot/queer/other LGBT terminology as swearwords?

I had this convesration with my brother. I am against the use of these words as swears because I think them being used derogatory is hurting the LGBT community and people that might be confused about their sexuality/gender. He on the other hand has "no reason" to ever stop using them as swears and apparently can't see anything wrong with it. The whole conversation emanated in him calling me a left wing feminist bitch  He argued that what I was saying was endorcing censorship which I truly don't, I just told him that maybe he should think for a second before he opens his big mouth.

Anyway, what's your opinion? Is it ok to use those words in a derogatory manner?

No, I don't think it's any different than using racial, religious or ethnic slurs in my opinion. All they do is put down another group of oppressed people in our society and make a mockery of LGBTQ people.

I don't think it's OK. Hell, I don't even think the word "dyke" is OK, and every other lesbian in the world seems to love that word.

I'd rather be a feminist bitch than a bigoted asshole.

    Fellow Swede!

No, I hate it when people do that. Unfortunately it happens frequently.
How I react depends on how they use it. When someone says "that's so gay" I'll usually respond with something like "yeah, isn't great!?" (if it's something that I find to be good) or "what does sexuality have to do with this?".

I agree with you BelleFromHell, I'd much rather be a feminist bitch than whatever my brother is.

I couldn't have said it better.

I can't stand it. It's absolutely rude. I find it so disappointing that even young children are made to think that the word gay is offensive. Once, I was talking with my 8 year old cousin, and he seems to have the notion that the word "homosexual" is incredibly offensive. It makes me sad.

Gay and faggot don't really bother me but I do think queer should stop being used as it can means odd, strange, suspicious, etc...

This makes think about last week. I was out running and ran past a group of young boys. They were literally screaming gay at each other. It made me really mad, I wish I had the guts to grab them by their ears.

I see this all too often, whether it be from family or just someone in the neighborhood.

A good example was recently when this group of guys was playing football in this park behind where I live. Something had sparked an argument and they started saying all kinds of stupid shit at each other. While there were a couple of racial things said, what they seemed to have more amusement throwing around, by far, was homophobic stuff. One guy even was spinning some of the homophobia back, but of course it was done in a mocking way.

I'm familiar with this kind of reaction as well. Not too long ago someone had said something to one of my cousins(some random, stupid bs they said that some guy said about a crush) and he yells back at him "I ain't gay!". And when I say yell, he said it in an extremely pissed off tone. It was kinda amusing how annoyed he was, but it obviously was sad to that he took such offense to it.

Funny, I love queer, but I'm not fond of the other two you mentioned. I think the nice thing about the word is it actually does acknowledge "Yes, I'm different from you" and proceeds to say "What are you going to do about it"?

I think, overall, it doesn't bother me. I think 99% of the time, people say words like gay or queer offhandedly without malice and don't mean them as a slight against LGBT people. That being said, whenever I hear somebody calling another person a faggot, I get all kinds of pissed - that one is never o.k. :eusa_naug

Honestly, I get why people don't like it, but it doesn't bother me at all.

I too am personally against using these words. Friends have used the term "fag" in friend of me, even knowing I'm gay, and despite how I know they aren't homophobic, it still bothers me.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone uses the word gay to mean something stupid. I usually fire right back at them with this example.

Them: That car is so gay.
Me: Im pretty sure that car is not a homosexual.
