Default $100,000 baby?

"New reproductive technologies are giving would-be parents more options -- if they can cough up enough money. One day, some experts say, parents might be able to order blue-eyed, academically inclined, cancer-free kids."

The technology doesn't exist but they are working hard. I'm curious as to what everyone thinks about this.

Hmmm...

Before I say anything, I'd like to assure all of Empty Closets that I do not mean to offend anybody with this observation. I apologize in advance for any offense that may be taken, as any such offense is not given with intentional purpose.

My opinion: I have a feeling that any such scientific engineering could drastically and negatively affect the human ideal of perfection to a status-quo reminiscent of WWII Germany's "Aryan Race." By engineering perfect children, one has put into the hands of aristocracy the power to 'purify' the human race in accordance with one's own personal tastes; tastes which would defy the very diversity of humanity itself and therefore bring a new type of human segregation into view.

However, it would make a fantastic sci-fi novel.

I'd rather my kids be "academically inclined" because I talked to them, and sang to them, and read to them when they were babies. All that is absolutely free!

And so where does it stop?

Do we engineer the sex of our child? The hair colour too? What about whether they'll be skinny or fat? Athletic? Yes please! I want my son to be good at sports. And extroverted so he'll have confidence.

What about sexuality? What's to stop parents stopping their children from being gay?

That's horrible.....people shouldn't be able to change their kids like that.

But what is a perfect child? Can we so readily establish that an academic inclined child is superior to a musically inclined child? What about character development. Is it said that "smart" (defined by general society) children tend to be less resilient compared to their counterparts. So many things to consider... Even if I can afford such technology, I'd probably just let God (or fate) decide what's best for my children..
