I'm new around here and notice that there're not many Asian in this forum.

So I just curious about the stereotype that people from other continent have about Asian.

Did you really can't tell the different between Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Thais people?

and do you have any stereotype about Asian people?:icon_bigg

I'm Asian, but I can tell you that almost everyone here automatically assumes you're Chinese and can speak Mandarin if you look a certain way, and they refuse to believe there are other Asian countries other than China, Japan, and Korea.

    As for Asian stereotypes:

    1. rice
    2. noodle
    3. chopstick
    4. ching chang chong
    5. ∫ x n dx = xn+1 /(n+1) if n+1 ≠ 0
    6. drive = bad
    7. cannot.... speak... ENGRISH
    8. short as hell

I can't tell whether someone's Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.

All those stereotypes that Nychthemeron listed really annoy me. >.<

Oh, but he forgot the stereotype that Asian chicks are hot.

Oops, wait... That's not a stereotype; that's reality.

    Everyone? Yourself included, eh? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I feel I can differentiate fairly well for someone that has never lived extensively in any Asian areas. Or by "here" do you mean in your area of the US?

Stereotypes - yeah, everything Nych listed are ones I've heard in the West.

    This is gold...

There's also this one thing... All westerners think that Asians, sinospheric Asians, all speak in an American accent, so they kinda flip when they hear Received Pronunciation uttered from my lips.

So yeah... all Asians who speak english fluently must speak in an American accent... weird...

SHIT hahaha... alright, I'll give you that. But it always seems to happen to me. Lemme rephrase it... many people, more often than not, think that.

I'm Chinese, but I can't always tell different Asian races from each other; though I'm not as clueless as some others. Though I can't tell a lot of the European races apart from each other, so I don't think it's just an Asian thing.

I always believed in this stereotype that Korean girls are really pretty, just because there's this beautiful, stereotypically hot Korean girl at my school.

Really? Being half-Korean myself and going to a school with many Koreans... some of the girls have so much plastic surgery to be 'pretty'.

I can't tell the difference between a Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Thai person just by looking at them. The same way I can't tell the difference between a white German, Dutch, Belgian and French person just by looking at them.

I'm Dutch (white) and what does annoy me is that a lot of white people I know assume every Asian they see is either Chinese or Japanese and for some reason some of them get freaking offended when you correct them AND they're often the same people who get offended when someone asks if they're German when they're in a foreign country.

    Nychthemeron already mentioned the stereotypes.

Majority of the ones I've met think that "Asians" all look like they're of a Chinese descent and disregards the fact that it's a large continent composed of other countries too. India, Pakistan, Philippines, Bangladesh etc. are all located in Asia yet each one of those countries have a distinctive look compared to "East Asians". Most of the time I can distinguish the difference between Thais, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Indonesians etc. because I've been exposed to them a lot. Although there are times where Chinese, Koreans, and some Thais can look similar. I learned throughout (from a Thai friend) that there are Thais that have Chinese ancestry and I think same goes for Koreans.

I have 'friends' and relatives who jokes about Thai men as "transsexuals" (perhaps from the hangover movie?).

Asian women as docile and submissive. Asian men being emasculated and having a small 'thing' down there.

Asian parents are strict and conservative.

They eat 'strange foods' (chicken feet and dogs?)

There are a lot of stereotypes from them (specifically from 'East Asians'). I am American but of course not all of us thinks this way but there is a sad proportion of them who do (or the ones I've met at least).

    "Here" as in locally.

And, well, I used to, but there's actually a lot more Vietnamese people, so I just call them Asian.

  17. I've noticed the stereotype that Arabs and Indians are not included in the Asian category unless you're British. I just look at those people like "What continent do you think their ancestry is from?"

I'm Chinese-Vietnamese and I can agree that the driving stereotype for Chinese people is partially true. It's only valid among the immigrants. I live in a region where the Chinese migrant population is very prominent and they suck at driving.

Most of the time, people can't tell the difference between each Asian. The only thing I can think of is that Japanese people tend to look slightly Caucasian. Japanese guys are usually the tallest among East Asia.

It was a silly stereotype that I only believed ("believed" is a strong word in this context) in from observing one Korean-American girl among millions. I can't really say I seriously believed it. It sucks to hear that the ones you see get plastic surgery. The one at my school goes "All-Naturale;" at least, I think.

I've got absolutely no bias against Asian races whatsoever. I've had friends (in the past, when I actually knew people, and had friends) from Korea, Nepal, India...coincidentally my Korean friend happened to be really cute as well, and I missed what was literally an invitation to sleep in his bed, due to my then denial of my gay side. Or was it just excessive shyness? One of many such missed opportunities from my youth which I can kick myself for now.
