So this video popped up on my Twitter feed and I can't help but wonder, was this what the 80's were really like?

Apparently this is something called "SportAerobics" where the object is to get as creative as you can with choreographed exercises to a given set of music. This was the intro to the 1988 National Aerobics Competition, where they all competed on HBO, with Alan Thicke as the host with his greased, slicked-back, Thicke 1980's hair.

Just thought you might want a good laugh to start your day.

Not as bad as the 70's though...the decade that fashion forgot.

Did they have those leotard abominations and those Baywatch knockoff red two-pieces too?

Greatwhale beat me to this. When I saw the thread title, I, too, went to how awful the 70s were. Not only was the fashion of that era an absolute abomination, but much of the popular music sucked.

The 80s brought us some horrid hair and some pretty bad fashions, but I think the 70s takes the cake.

Thanks for the laugh! I'm glad I don't remember any of the '80's. I wonder what people are going to (including ourselves) look back on and laugh at in another 30 years from now.

Luckily for me I only had to endure 25 months of the 80s but the early 90s were just as bad.

I feel exhausted just watching that. Where do they get their energy, cocaine was popular in the 80s right?! Athletes they certainly are!

Its funny, we complain about the likes of modern trends like twerking and hip hop videos for objectifying women, but damn those women's outfits are revealing!

On a side note, I really hate myself for saying this but the music is incredibly catchy. Almost makes me want to do rhythmic starjumps and high kicks....almost.

Twenty years later, on EC, we'll see this thread : "Were the 10's that bad?"

Yeah, the 80s were "that bad" but at least they were fun. 90s were just a depression, from beginning to end : Think about Nirvana, The Verve, Radiohead... Nobody wrote any song named "celebration" during the 90s.

    I loved that video

Never had personal experience growing up in the '80s of course, but to hear people (primarily the boyfriend, who remains extraordinarily nostalgic about his childhood in the '90s) go on about it is to think that everyone was walking past shuttered, foreclosed office buildings, in tight aerobics clothing all while swimming through a cloud of cocaine dust.

Thank God I was born when it was ending and I spent most of the last years of the 80's as a baby and can't remember a thing about it .

And I know somebody from 2044 is going to see a video of Nicki Minaj and decide that the 2010s were really that bad.

The opening of the 1986 National Aerobic Championship is probably the most "80's" thing I have ever seen, I wonder what this decade will be remembered for...
I hope it isn't spandex though!

David Lee Roth summed up the 80s by saying "That was the decade that SMILED. The music SMILED, the fashion SMILED, everything SMILED." I think that sums it up pretty well.

The 80s were my 10-to-20-year-old range, and as such, it's tough to separate my youthful nostalgia from How Things Actually Were. I could easily pull up a bunch of really terrible stuff from the last few years to show how awful the Terrible Teens were. The fact is - yes, a bunch of us did aerobics in the 80s, but I'm guessing more than 99.9% of us had no idea that "competitive aerobics" was a thing, even back then.
