I'm a girl that likes girls but don't feel like writing out/saying "lesbian" all the time, it's easier to just say I'm gay.. Is that wrong or offensive, is that term only okay for guys?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with using "gay" for females. You can be gay no matter what your gender.

    Everyone can be gay .

Why not call a lesbian gay? I don't think anyone would be offended? "Gay" is kind of a umbrella term to me

I'm the same way. I don't like the word lesbian. Sounds like a dirty word to me haha

    I typically call myself gay.

Do whatever feels right! Personally I just prefer lesbian cause it gets straight to the point for me. If I call myself gay people will think I like men because they perceive me as a man -.- at least if I call myself a lesbian they don't make a mistake there XD

It does sound kinda dirty ha, because of the way people turn lesbians into entertainment.. Like "omg look two girls making out thats so hot!"

Calm down people, my love life is not a show

A lot of women whom are lesbians prefer calling themselves gay so I don't think it's really an issue at all.

I work with a lesbian who calls herself "gay. She asks us to refer to her that way in terms of sexual orientation, which obviously I respect.

No, it isn't. I think it's ridiculous to have different labels anyway. The genders make do with the same labels for other sexualitys. Some gay women prefer the term gay to lesbian anyway.

honestly, i have no problem with it myself but some people may not like the bad stigma brought upon the word by bigots and homophobs

As opposed to the stigma of being made into a sexual object by the aforementioned bigots and homophobes?

I prefer gay, not a problem, but that's just me. It can depend on a person...

I prefer gay too and the girls in my school who say they're gay because they like men just makes me want to slap them across the face with a brick so Nope it's a gender neutral label, for females and males alike

Gay means homosexual, that is person attracted by other people with the same sex.

Lesbian cannot be used for homosexual guys, because it means homosexual woman.

Therefore, Gay is an unisex term.

P.S. Only a Personal Opinion = I find the word Lesbian useless.

There are people who connect the word with things like amazons... freedom... and a tribal past where women had more rights (there were many, its just not much handed down)...

if the word comes up in an internet search in connection with sex, its possible to include undesired words with a minus in front, like -porn.

There are a few languages where gay is not used for both sexes...

Some people hate the word because it generally reminds people of pornstars. I find that straight people who are more LGBT friendly usually say 'gay' anyway.

Besides, I think It's useless to differentiate the terms. Why not say that men who are straight, bisexual, or trans need different words too then?

This. I know a few gay guys who oppose females using the term, as they feel they're taking a term that once applied to men, mostly, and feel they should have their own, but that distinction doesn't exist for heterosexuals, bisexuals, etc.
