Do you shop on Black Friday (in person, not online :lol:slight_smile:? If you shop, what do you like to get? Do you enjoy the crowds?

Do you think that it has slowly encroached upon Thanksgiving Day and caused many retail employees to have to work on a day meant for family (and football :lol:slight_smile:? Is this American consumerism at its worst?

    ------------------

Several years ago, we hosted Thanksgiving at our house and after everyone had left and my dad and sister had gone to bed, my mom and I were tidying up the house, washing dishes, etc. It was around 1AM and I told her, "by the way, Old Navy is open right now," and she was surprised and we actually went there on a stormy Friday night. We had fun and enjoyed it. We still go every year, but avoid the crowds and don't line up for any "doorbusters." I usually like to get some Blu-rays and

However, one thing that I hate is that many stores now open on 6PM on Thanksgiving Day. I think that's too much. I'd rather have it start on Friday, for the sake of everyone. Let everyone enjoy a good holiday meal and have time to relax. However, it's like an arms race, Walmart opens their deals at 6PM (because they never close), Target opens at 6PM, and everyone else has to follow suit, save for a few stores.

Black Friday is great. Cheap electronics, and sometimes cheaper clothes. Not even Christmas shopping just for me.

    I don't usually go. I don't do a lot of holiday shopping.

I like outlets, though. On this Black Friday (have never understood where that came from - it should be Orange Friday, for all the pumpkins that were consumed the day before), I have an appointment for some regular auto service and the outlets nearby will be opening up at an ungodly hour, so I'll stop by to see if I can "steal" a pair of pants and a shirt, possibly a rugby shirt or another long sleeved type shirt/pullover, if I see some I like.

I believe it stems from the fact that for the fiscal quarter, stores make the most holiday sales at around this time and are finally "in the black" as opposed to "in the red," so they make their profits, and in accounting, black is good, red is bad . I think that's where the term originated.

Ok, that makes sense and sounds vaguely familiar.

They bump the prices up before Black Friday to make things look cheaper... you can maybe even find something for a similar price another time of the year. Quite frankly, I think Black Friday is the worst time to go shopping in big stores like Walmart or Best Buy. It's just not worth the brawl fights and stampedes. There's literally been times when someone was crushed to death when a Walmart opened and everyone came rushing in.

Also, I don't approve of stores starting their "Black Friday" shopping on Thanksgiving. I'd go later in the day on Friday and probably buy some decently priced clothes or gifts when all the mobs are gone.

    I can't imagine a much worse hell.

Actually, I think it's hilarious that ads are now talking about "getting a head-start on Black Friday"...um...wasn't the whole point of Black Friday to "get a head-start on your Christmas shopping"?

I went to a walmart on Black Friday and being around that big of a crowd of walmart shoppers was enough Black Fridat for me for the next decade. I can hardly stand Walmart as it is. I did get a cheap nice tv though... I feel Black Friday isn't really worth it though unless you have specific items you need. The prices I noticed weren't really that great to deal with all the people and waste all that time on a holiday (I think when I got my tv it was actually thanksgiving evening). It seems dangerous and idk why they have to do it all in one day. But I typically don't consume too many goods other than food so I don't usually need to go out and buy cheap electronics and such.

I think it's everything that's wrong with this country :tantrum:

WalMart doesn't even sell anything that good. Now if the Gucci store had a Black Friday sale, I could see being interested

I find it incredibly ironic that Americans have Black Friday right after Thanksgiving. One day they're supposedly thankful for everything they have and the next day they're literally trampling each other and spending all of their money to get everything they ever wanted. Like, what happened to being thankful for everything you have? :roflmao:

Come on, you know all those #thankful pictures and dinners are just to take photos, post on Instagram and Facebook, and make other jealous .

I've worked during it and shopped. Dumbest thing I have ever done or seen. Craziness, for a simple sale.

I don't shop on Black Friday, I go to hell the mall and people watch. The entertainment begins in the parking lot and just gets better from there. I've found that Best Buy and Bed Bath and Beyond are the most entertaining stores on Black Friday.
