Should the Bush Administration be put on trial for starting a war with Iraq, knowing that their casus belli (Iraq having Weapons of mass destructions) was false and deceiving the world that their war was 'right'?

Who do you think should be put in jail?

i think Noam Chomsky said once that all the american presidents after Roosevelt should get a trial similar to the one in Nurnberg .

Yes, along with their lap dog Tony Blair.

Sounds good to me. As for who should go to jail - the guilty ones. That is what the trail is supposed to ascertain.

True, but we can have a guess who might be guilty and has to be tried. Bush at least, since he was trying to find excuses to go to war with Iraq even before the 9/11 attacks, but who else?

wasn't cheney masterbating on his lesbian daughter once?? think there was such scandal...or i am making this up?

i also think once he shot a guy "on accident" .

both were crazy. The only Amrican president/vice i like in recent history is Al Gore. The guy just rocks. Obama is overrated...though not bad, i think he can fit in my list of top 20 us presidents but won't put him in top 10 - something his cult-followers would do.

Bush however seems like one of the worst to me, i like only his jokes  and nothing else.

Bush's foreign policy was quite incompetent thanks to the crazy neoconservative advisers (and Dick Cheney, of course) he had surrounding him.

But put on trial? Yeah, no.

You don't think people should be responsible for the harm they cause?

That Americans want to be the champions of democracy and humanity without being subject to accountability from the highest external courts is an act of extreme arrogance and hypocrisy.

Whether Bush (and Blair, as BiShoegazer mentioned) would be found guilty, I don't know, but there's every reason to put them on trial for illegally beginning a war, or at the very least for authorising the less savoury aspects of the war, such as their interference in the Iraqi democracy they set up following SH's defeat (and perhaps failing to protect him for the sake of an Iraqi or international trial deserves censure at the very least). Some of the troops on the ground could also do with war crimes investigations but, like in any war, those would likely fall far short of getting all guilty people to face justice.

Should Dick Cheney then be put on trial? Where would you put the line on holding politicians accountable for criminal acts, or do you think all politicians should be immune? I'm really interested in arguments for that, as I already know the arguments for putting them on trial. :icon_wink

Maybe I'm just sick of hearing Bush's name, but I really don't think this guy's even worth mentioning and getting up in arms about. And if the USA joins the ICC, I worry that the US opinion will end up trumping over everyone else's decision.

  13. I don't think the U.S should be tried in the International Court. I've heard of many events which were much worse than Bush. Pol Pot was never tried, Mao Zedong was never tried, and Pinochet was never tried, and the Argentine was never tried for the Dirty War.

If you put them on trial, put them on trial in our courts.

Yes, and capital charges should be considered.

Also, Pinochet was never tried precisely because we supported him. Henry Kissinger should have been executed.

The ICC is younger than I am. Of course they couldn't have put Mao Zedong on trial.

And I second Pret Allez's statement about Pinochet. Nasty man, but it's not as if the USA wasn't responsible for him.

Also, the ICC hasn't dealt with the Khmer Rouge because of the ECCC being created to deal with the Khmer Rouge's crimes. (Khmer Rouge Tribunal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Not only the Bush admin, but also the ex-pm of Australia John Howard, who knew the evidence of wmd's was false but didn't tell the Australian people, and duly sent our troops off to fight in a war based upon false evidence. Howard needs to stand trial as well.

Yeah, it's just a little more complicated than what you're reducing it to.

Bush's foreign policy failures have more to do with an idealistic ideology mixed with intelligence that was incorrect on WMD.
