Those who don't celebrate Christmas? (or don't want too?)

I was wondering what proportion of people on here don't celebrate, or don't want to celebrate Christmas? Either through their own beliefs or lack there off, their culture, etc.

I've been raised in an atheist household, but Christmas is a big deal, my family loves it, it is also my mum's and aunt's birthday on the 25th and 27th....but I hate Christmas. I don't want to celebrate it as I'm not religious, I don't see the point, but I do want to make my family happy.

How do those with different feelings cope with a Christmas obsessed culture?

Wow, someone else here (sort of) doesn't celebrate Christmas?! I honestly thought I was the only one.

My mum's religion sort of prohibits her celebrating Christmas, so we've never celebrated it in our household. I don't share her beliefs, but like you I'm not a Christian/Pagan so I don't really feel the need to celebrate Christmas either. I haven't really missed it, especially when I see people rushing round the shops all stressed out. Plus, in this economy I'm sort of glad my friends don't feel pressured into giving me a gift- they haven't got a lot of money and I'm happy they don't feel forced into spending it on me.

I just take a break, watch the Christmas specials, and generally chill out at Christmas. I guess that's what most people do, anyway? The only awkward part is that everybody always asks what you've got planned for Christmas, and they don't know how to react when you say you don't celebrate it. Also the songs. In every shop. *sigh*

I hate christmas. I hate the consumerism, and I hate the food, and I hate the family. Oh, and let's not forget the music or the decorations.

    I a) hide, and b) don't celebrate it.

You're never alone, yaaay for us *high five*

But yeah totally, people just seem to be baffled by the fact that we don't love it/are also obsessed by it.

I also hate the consumerism that is EVERYWHERE at Christmas, and the fake-ness of family. "oh it's Christmas let's all pretend that we like each other"

    ↑↑↑ - This.

Also, where i live, "Christmas" is just an excuse for people to do stupid things. Last year, they set a car on fire, the year before that they almost started a fire due to the grass being dry (we have weird weather). And this is just in the neighborhood, imagine all the stuff that's happening in others places. I would not even dare to go in the city, during Christmas...

And the "fun" part, i now have to put aside all the stuff i'm dealing with, just so that i can decorate a tree branch, my mom brought with the idea of "oh it has to smell like Christmas". Guess who gets to clean that up after the holidays...

I like most of Christmas. I celebrate it as a national holiday (you'll see this justification a lot from me) and a cultural holiday. In fact, I'm more likely to celebrate the winter solstice than Christmas, but Christmas is what everyone else celebrates, so oh well.
I do like the music, since I like pretty much all music, and I enjoy that. I hate getting together with family however, that sucks, and putting the tree up and decorations is just silly and annoying.

    I don't.
I'm firmly atheist, and I find the whole process ridiculous. But it is hard, because even at school, we do all the Christian stuff and I think it feels excluding not only for me but for people with other religions too.

To be honest, if I wanted, I could celebrate Christmas. No God dictates what I can and can't do, and therefore if I really did want I could just have a secular Christmas. But some religions forbid the celebration of others' festivals such as Christmas, and for some people in my school they really are unable to celebrate it and are ostracised for that.

Which is why schools should be secular and not partake in any religious festivals.

Having had to actively try and convince my teachers that my parents didn't want me to partake in various religious activities over the years, I completely agree.

They really didn't know what to do with me. The amount of times we had to write stories about "the best Christmas ever" or make Easter themed cards was ridiculous.

I'm Jewish and I don't celebrate Christmas at all. I used to be pretty religious but even now that I'm not I don't even think of celebrating it. What I don't understand is why people get so bent out of shape over it, like I'm insulting them somehow. I'm not telling them not to celebrate Christmas, I'm just not doing it myself. Why should anyone even care?

I put up with Christmas because my family celebrates it. My family is religious and I don't believe in Jesus. This never goes over very well and I am tired of relatives trying to convert me. Lots of drunkenness and fighting. I am poor and don't have much money to spend on gifts. My relatives have money and brag about the vacations they took and the ipads they bought for their kids and I have to sit through this. My favorite day is Dec.26th because all the stress is over for another year.

So glad to have found this thread at this moment.

My family doesn't believe in xmas but they celebrate it anyway. I believe there is a God but not in Jesus. Which makes me think what this celebration is all about if i don't believe in its true meaning.

For many years i have run from my family's Christmas, being with friends or partners, or traveling, trying to spend it as a night out just like any other. But to me it makes no sense to have to gather with people I am not very fond of and that wouldn't accept who I am.

How do you guys deal with having to celebrate this holiday?

Being Jewish (today is the 8th, and last, day of Hanukah) Christmas is not something I celebrate, which is why Jerry Seinfeld's "Festivus for the Rest of Us" is so cool!

...it just means movies and Chinese food...

Yeah, I agree totally. Music is cheesy, I am forced socialise, and oh god, the lights...there's a guy down the road (He's my friend though) and his house radiates light. Constantly. If there was an over the top light competition, they would win. Every year. I like the food and getting stuff though. Those are the two good things.
Oh yeah, we are forced to sing carols at school. Its horrible.

Exactly! Why is it a day you must pretend you like your family? :tantrum:

I just love winter. Getting bundled up, drinking coffee, having a good time... I never felt like I needed Christmas for that since it's a one time kind of occasion and winter is a whole season. Plus winter is all the more reason to cuddle lol
