Do y'all prefer white or colored Christmas lights? Does it matter whether it's for a tree or house decorations? Does your family have different preferences?

Here is an interesting article about this debate.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/24/nyregion/24lights.html?_r=0

    ---------------------

Personally, I prefer the "main" Christmas tree (the more "formal" one) to be the one with white lights. If you have a "fun" Christmas tree, it can have colored lights. The one thing I don't like is the C7 huge Christmas lights. I find them a bit too much for me.

For outdoor decorations, I prefer simple white lights. I do find them more aesthetically pleasing.

I love both. White, red, or multicoloured are all my favourites.

I like Red, Green, and White, but that's it. Orange and purple and stuff give me anxiety attacks in Christmas light form

Any particular reason for such a strong reaction?

I don't like Christmas and lights are an extension of said holiday so naturally I don't like/care for them as well. I don't even see the point in them...

We usually have a green tree, with everything in silver. It looks very nice combined with coloured lights. :icon_bigg So I voted coloured!

I like a mixture of both. However, I really like blue lights.

Both, with a preference for colored. I usually put up a set of colored lights on the curtain rod in my room every Christmas. As for the living room - where the three is - for a couple years now we've used a set of white incadescent lights and a set of colored LED lights. It's a nice blend.

Colored, and all colors, not just a single color (e.g. all blue or all green). A lot of this is sentiment/tradition--it was what we did when I grew up. We never had white in the sense of a clear bulb (apart from blinker bulbs in mini strands), but did have white colored C7 bulbs (an actual white coating on the bulb). I'd use this color, and tolerate it, but it was probably my least favorite.

But I could see using a single color bulb in decorating. Perhaps all blue if I were decorating something green outside.

I won't rule out white or clear...but see it as a remote possibility.

I have mixed feelings, and have flip flopped on this issue...

C7 has sentiment--it was the primary illumination bulb on the trees we had when I grew up. But (practically) I don't like the energy use, and also at times have thought the mini bulbs are nicer. At least as of the last tree I decorated (last year), I did mostly mini bulbs, but one small strand of C7 bulbs for old time's sake, plus to allow me to use some bubbling lights.

The title of the thread gave me a bit of a double take.

Neither. I really hate Christmas lights. They're rarely done well and make everything look so gaudy.

Especially when all that can be seen from the main forum is "White or colored Christmas..."

Probably true. But that's just the nature of it, I guess. Let's be honest--Christmas trees are not refined decorations usually, even before considering the lights.

But there is a place for that.

American etiquette writer Miss Manners told me--and all her other gentle readers--that a house that is in perfect taste is really in shocking taste. We need those few items aren't the highest or best, she opined.

I have LED and halogen based lights on my Christmas tree and banister. I have colored lights outside on the bushes, just to have a nice healthy mixture I guess.

I think Christmas trees can be quite refined; you just have to know how to decorate them well.

Either way, I prefer colored Christmas lights, and NOT those horrible cold LED lights. Traditional warm colored lights. Those are the best. White lights are good for accent decorations, however  But on the tree and on the outside of the house I prefer colored lights.

I like the white lights, but I prefer the colorful lights, they're fun and festive.
