    Hi all,

The title says it..do people around the world still think that most Germans are fascists?

Let me explain why this question comes to my mind.

The last weeks/month there were lots of demonstrations in bigger german cities from a group called PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans Against The Islamization Of The West). I think this group formed at the time, when IS terror became more and more.
There a thousands of participants who go on the street and protest against Islam. And it's not only that. They are also pretty anti-immigration, against refugees and they spread all their hate against these groups.

Participants are right-wing extremists but also pretty normal people of all ages.
I'm so shocked and it makes me sad to see how many people just spread their hate and lost humanity.
    They learned nothing from history.

Only thing that gives me hope is the fact that there are always more people on the streets which protest against these PEGIDA idiots.

    Sorry for this long explanation.

So this is basicly what brought me to the point to think, that this must cause a really bad impression for people from other countries (especially with the look on the german past).

So what do you think of us germans? Do you still think we are "the fascists no. 1"

Unless the Goosestep becomes the nation's official dance craze again, I'd have to say no.

No, I don't think many people think of Germans as fascists anymore. Quite the opposite actually. In any case I think fascism and nationalism are things which generally depend far more on economic and/or social circumstances than any form of nationality. After all, Germany definitely isn't the only country that's been having problems with the far right lately, it's much more to do with the economic and political turmoil of the last years.

Nobody worth talking to, at least.

Germany still has problems with the far-right. But the French, Swedish, British and Hungarians look more troublesome than the Germans at the moment. Nobody with half a brain is going to think that Germany is still the same Germany as under Nazi rule, but anyone with education knows that Germany didn't acquire Nazism by pure fluke and that its causes did not fully disappear with Hitler's death. The thing is just that it could have and still could so easily happen in so many other places in Europe as it did in Germany all those years ago.

Fascism is certainly not uniquely German, especially given its origins in Italy. But Fascism remains a difficulty and a horror for Germany to continue to actively confront, the same duty that all countries that have dealt with and deal with it must own up to.

No, not at all. All the Germans that I've met seem to be lovely, open minded people.

    Heil Kortzfleisch!

I am utterly tired of the national-masochism and guilt cult that is being practised in Germany.
It's time to close that Chapter just like the chapter of Stalin and the chapter of Mao were closed.

There is enough in German history that allows to be proud of your ancestry and nation.
Most nations next to Germany have much stricter immigration laws, but I don't see anyone calling them nazis, or being afraid of being called just that.

Anyone who matters doesn't. It's really not a widespread opinion. Please don't worry. I'm sorry you had to witness that, but you're not the only one on whom it had such an impact, and that's what can give you faith in humanity.

No because Germany would be the last country to go back to that seeing as they'll never live it down.

I cannot speak on behalf of other people, but I think that majority of Germans are not fascist.

There are probably a couple complete idiots here and there that are under that impression - but for the most part, no.

Thanks for all your great responses

Actually I know that german people are not seen as Nazis anymore. But I can't help, the things happening here at the moment brought it back to my mind somehow...

Sorry, I'm not going to apologise.

But you can file a complaint and sent it to the person who came up with that toast around 1500!
