Every so many years, CNN decides to do a new article about terms that teens are using in IM... and they've recently updated it to terms people are using in texting and messaging apps.

They have a long history of coming up with hilarious terms that nobody I know -- of any age -- has ever heard of. I sometimes wonder if they just make them up so they'll have something to say.

I recognize about a third of these, and those are ones that, as far as I know, are pretty outdated.

I'm curious, for those members who are in their teen years, how many of these terms you've ever actually heard of or used.

    1. IWSN - I want sex now
    2. GNOC - Get naked on camera
    3. NIFOC - Naked in front of computer
    4. PIR - Parent in room
    5 CU46 - See you for sex
    6. 53X - Sex
    7. 9 - Parent watching
    8. 99 - Parent gone
    9. 1174' - Party meeting place
    10. THOT - That hoe over there
    11. CID - Acid (the drug)
    12. Broken - Hungover from alcohol
    13. 420 - Marijuana
    14. POS - Parent over shoulder
    15. SUGARPIC - Suggestive or erotic photo
    16. KOTL - Kiss on the lips
    17. (L)MIRL - Let's meet in real life
    18. PRON - Porn
    19. TDTM - Talk dirty to me
    20. 8 - Oral sex
    21. CD9 - Parents around/Code 9
    22. IPN - I'm posting naked
    23. LH6 - Let's have sex
    24. WTTP - Want to trade pictures?
    25. DOC - Drug of choice
    26. TWD - Texting while driving
    27. GYPO - Get your pants off
    28. KPC- Keeping parents clueless

I'm not a teen, but many of these are kind of useful to know, I suppose. Some are sort of obvious, like PRON, but...

    That one? Come on!

That's a great list! Thanks for posting. Very creative. As an English major, I love seeing how language and communication evolve and adapt to circumstances.

I've not used these, (not a teen anymore, except maybe in attitude) but it's fun to see that people growing up still maintain a sort of sovereign, secret world, outside of the sphere of their parents. There's a certain beauty to that.

Also, this seems typical of the alarmist, paranoid nature of 'news' channels like CNN and Fox; always thinking of some shocking new menace to scare people with. Will Americans never tire of being scared, shocked and outraged???

Nope, we like to feel like the world is ending so that we can batten down the hatches and act like we know what's up. Fear and anger are great for giving people purpose and direction.

I mean, you'd have to find kids who are/were interested in online activity of a sexual nature.. I certainly wasn't among them. Just MMORPGs.

The use of 420 is extremely common. Pir and pos are definitely ones I remember as well.

So if the non-sexual ones hold, I wouldn't be surprised if the sexual ones are also correct/used.

I've only ever used 420 as a joke.

I thought it was plos, parent looking over shoulder. lol. That's what I used.

Unfortunately, I know of someone accosted online, but I won't even say the abbreviation used to try to lure him. Let's just say it's really bad.

I haven't seen any of those acronyms/terms used before, except for the well-known '420'.

Only 420, but who hasn't heard that? I've never been very rebellious or into anything risky like drugs, sex, or alcohol. If I was, maybe I would've heard more.

    Creative. Pity it's not realistic.

They could've had fun with real ones, though. "gtg rn" (got to go right now) could have been played off as "going to guzzle right nipple" and ridiculous parents might have bought it.

How have people not heard of 420? That's been around at least a decade before I went to high school (so like 15 years at least).

Like the teachers even knew on April 20th (4/20) at least half the school was not showing up for classes.

So, according to CNN, your average teen's chat history is a cryptologist's wet dream.

    The more you know.

That's funny, I actually know '420' from montage parodies and never knew what it meant. I never bothered to research it though.
