This reminds me why I love science, I was just in a state of 'wow' while I watched this. The last few frames especially. My trust in science is absolute, nothing else made up by humans comes close. Make sure you put it on HD and fullscreen
My favorite reminder is the Pale Blue Dot. That little spec is earth taken from Voyager 1 at the request of Carl Sagan.
They found quite a few potentially habitable planets. The pictures they have of them look just like Earths. (Just different shapes of continents). The only problem is that it would take 10,000s of years to get to them with modern technology. *sigh*. We may have to accept that we won't find other life in our life time. The universe sure is amazing though...
It's a long exposure image, that's how astronomy often works, but it is not 'fake'. The Andromeda galaxy is generally considered a 'big brother' of our own Milky Way galaxy - which contains around 200-400 billion stars of various sorts in a disk about 100,000 light-years across. The Andromeda galaxy is about 220,000 light-years across and contains around a trillion stars. Like the Milky Way it is a spiral galaxy and, along with the Milky Way and Triangulum galaxies (plus numerous much smaller stellar groupings) forms the Local Group of galaxies. Current estimates put the number of galaxies in the visible universe at around 100 billion. Todd
