I've heard this phrase used many time around my school. I get angry every time I hear it, but then I thought about it. Technically speaking they are complimenting us In olden times gay was a term for being happy, bright, or attractive. So next time some one says "that's so gay" you can say thank you. Just thought I let you know next time you here it.

Nice way to turns things around. Sadly, I use it too when I am with friends. I know I shouldn't o that, but some things are just hard to stop.

I used to do it ALL THE TIME in middle school. Like, we're walking down the hall, just pointing at random things and calling them gay. It was strangely entertaining.

Then I realized i might be gay. THAT sure shut me up. :-|

I still catch myself saying it sometimes... SOOO glad it never happened around my gay friends.

    :roflmao:

I did hear it a LOT in high school, but as my peers grew up with me, I've heard it less and less to the point where I can't remember the last time I heard it.

I hate it when dumb Straight boys say that...I heard a lot of kids in Middle School say stuff like:
    "That game's Gay..."
Who knew video games were into Homosexuality...

I usually just say "Yes, isn't GREAT!?" if I like the thing that's "gay", or "Oh really? Does [insert item] feel attraction?" if it's something negative. It usually leaves them grasping for words.

I think it's context dependent. My friends use it freely around me because they know that I know that they don't mean it in a derogatory way. They don't say it around gay people they're not close with.

Of course, there'll always be people who DO use it in a mud-slinging kinda way :frowning2:

This always happens at my school. One day I heard someone say it, then I shouted 'that's homophobic language' . Then he said, not sure how he knew about this. A random guy, ' I can't be, I know you.'
    First, that makes no sense.
Second, never seen him before. News sure travels fast.

But in modern times it's used as an insult and such behavior must not be tolerated. So many gay youth are killing themselves because they're tormented with such insults. Especially in school, those terms must be well controlled, people at that age are very very vulnerable and the last thing they need is being labeled or made feel different.

I think one thing to remember is that normally these people just don't know anything about us (but really how can we force them all). What I mean is that usually, it isn't a personal attack or even an attack on the gay community. It's just... the word right now :\

    I use it sometimes.

I'm fine with it, but for other people's sake, I try not to.

I must be pretty sheltered because I never heard it much in my school. Then again, it was quite suburban and being gay was kind of a don't ask, don't tell thing.
