First, state what country you live in.

Then, when do you attach your safety belts as you prepare to drive off, if you do so it all?

    Take the poll.

I live in the United States.

If someone is in the car, I ask that we all buckle up right away. If I'm in the car by myself, I usually buckle up slightly after getting moving, such as after backing out. I used to buckle up right away. I should stick to that. And you?

Since I was very young I was taught to buckle up, even when state laws weren't so strict. My parents said it was common sense. I do it automatically as soon as I get in the vehicle without thinking of it. I feel naked without it.

As soon as I get into a car...every time. I live in New Zealand, using seatbelts is mandatory.... but even if it wasn't I'd still do it...I am in no rush to die.

All of Illinois can agree on buckling up. We are very passionate about our driving laws, here. At least we can all agree on one thing, here.

I always buckle up. I've taken it off a few times on long trips with my family as a kid but I don't do that anymore. I would rather be uncomfortable and safe than comfortable and badly injured.

These days, seat belt usually gets buckled before starting the engine, and probably as soon as I'm seated.

I've always worn a seat belt, and my parents did so as well. Apparently, from what my mother said, my father was such a frightening driver once that she got sold on the seat belt idea.

Like commented above, I feel naked without it.

Historical point: I remember when seat belts became a requirement in WA in the 1980s. I was a teenager at the time, and we had at least one assembly featuring some trooper from the Washington State Patrol to tell us all about the law, and that we needed to wear our seat belts.

I buckle up right after starting the engine. It's a whole routine for me.
Unlock gear lock> Put key in ignition> Start the engine> Lock door> Seatbelt on> Radio on, then I drive off.

When there's a passenger in my car, I ask them to buckle up too (if they haven't done so already), even if they don't like it. If they don't buckle up, I don't drive off. My car, my rules. If you don't like it - don't drive with me.

I buckle up immediately, otherwise I feel uncomfortable. However, as a child I never did, at least not for long. That changed for obvious reasons after I had a bad car accident.

I live in Switzerland. I buckle up right away, unless I'm helping my brother do it.

US, I buckle up every single time.

I was in a car wreck a couple of years ago and I walked away with only a sprain wrist and some whiplash. If I wasn't wearing my seat belt, I probably would been thrown from the car, so yeah, I always put it on now.

I had a period where I would never buckle up, but that was because I always rode the bus which didn't have any, so whenever I got in a car I just forgot they existed. These days I always buckle up.

The second I get in the car, my seat belt goes on. Living in Missouri, I've witnessed my fair share of bad drivers.

UK (England) - I don't always wear a seatbelt when reversing or performing manoeuvres (the law permits this), but otherwise buckle up immediately.

Obviously i cannot drive yet, but when i am in a passenger seat, i usually put my seatbelt on just as the car starts to move. This is only because when i sit in the car i forget to do it, but the movement of the car reminds me.

I'm a fascist about seat belts : I make sure everyone in the car has bucked up. If they refuse, I buckle them up myself.

If you refuse to buckle up when I'm the driver, you'll be out of my car in seconds.

I remember when it wasn't required for backseats, back then when I was a child.
