It's a fairly simple question with a not-so-simple answer. Should people be allowed to end their lives as they see fit? Or should it only be allowed if the person has a debilitating or terminal illness? Or should people not be allowed to? Do you think this might have a negative impact if it or assisted suicide was allowed nationally? Share your opinion with me. Remember to be respectful of other people's opinions and beliefs, please.

If they want to die, let them die.

    Yes.

If abortion can be legal, and government murder can be legal, then suicide should also be legal.

Yes. Life is a right, not an obligation.

However, if a person wants to die, we should try to help them first, but the ultimate decision is personal.

I think it should be limited to assisted. Having suicide illegal means that if someone is trying to attempt it, police and doctors can intervene and help the person.

I strongly support assisted suicide. My step grandfather told my grandma six full years before he died that he wanted to be out of his misery. When you've watched a loved one get progressively worse and suffer unimaginable pain way longer than necessary, your perspective changes. He was living in a nursing home, had to have help with the most private and humiliating basic essentials of daily life, and he endured this for the last several years of his life.

He was forced to continue his suffering in this way because they were living in Florida, the state that fought in court for 15 years to keep a brain-dead woman alive against her wishes.

Restate the question as "should the terminally ill be forced to suffer?," and the answer becomes obvious.

While I hate it when people kill themselves, you can't really stop them.

But I believe assisted suicide should be a thing for the terminally ill. If they don't want to suffer, don't make them.

I refuse to believe that people who are suicidal cant be helped which is my main problem with the first thing. As 4 assisted suicide for medical problems I support it 100%

I believe everyone should have the right to die! Nobody should have to live forever.

I'm an advocate for assisted suicide for medical reasons. While I agree that a person has a right to end their lives, I think every other feasible option should be played out before someone were to take their life for nonmedical reasons. In the end, it's all up to the individual, though.

If a person is suffering from a terminal illness, then I think it's up to them to decide if they want to die sooner or endure it until the end.

I could probably think of extenuating circumstances in which I'd agree with a person's decision to kill themselves or allow themselves to be killed. So I'm unsure if I should vote for yes or assisted suicide only!

Anyway, we can't punish* somebody that succeeds at killing themselves. Although I've heard of people digging up corpses and taking them to court. Not for suicide but for other crimes. With that said, I agree with suicide being discouraged.

*I want to be clear that I think rehabilitation can be more useful than punishment. I just couldn't think of a better word to use.

Difficult question. I support euthanasia (for the most part and in medical settings).

Should people have the right to die? 100% Absolutely. However, that's not to say i'm encouraging people to commit suicide.

I think it's fucked up the double standard we have about suicide. Why is it that when someone is in physical pain it's okay to commit suicide, but it's "selfish" when a person does so for psychological reasons?

With BOTH physical and mental issues, society needs to do whatever it can to help that person. If someone is depressed, we should try and prevent those suicides but ultimately the choice of your life is up to you, not the government.

It depends. If someone is terminally ill, then yes. I think it's best that they have a choice so that they don't have to go through all that pain that will only lead you one way.

As for someone who's depressed committing suicide? No. Not at all.

I believe the option should be available for terminally ill patients. In regards to mental illness and depression I believe that you should always wait and see, you never know if something amazing is going to happen that will change your outlook.

That being said I had a horrible reaction to Zoloft that left me more depressed than I was before I took it and after a week and a half of hysterics and weeping over everything and nothing I understand a bit more how and why someone suffering from depression could or would commit suicide. If I actually lived like that day in and day out suicide would not feel like a bad option......
