I haven't been swimming for a long time and I'd struggle to cover any sort of distance now due to lack of pool time, but when I used to go often I made real progress and became a pretty decent swimmer. I was also in good shape from the regular exercise.

I'm just wondering if EC members enjoy swimming? Are you a good swimmer?

I love swimming. I've been swimming since I was 4 or 5. I don't like swimming in the ocean or rivers or most lakes. I HATE the feeling of sand, rocks and seaweed

Funny this thread should come up, since today I started swimming again after a months-long hiatus. I'd say I'm in the "a little" category- I can do front crawl fairly comfortably (the distance depends more on my stamina levels) and I can do breaststroke, if a little poorly, but I haven't bothered with the other strokes since my swimming lessons like 7 years ago  Are there any criteria for being a decent swimmer? Proficiency in all 4 strokes I guess, which is me out haha.

I don't swim often anymore, but I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't know how to swim. It's like riding a bike for me, except easier after a long period without.

I answered "decent swimmer" because "a little" felt like not enough, I guess. I'm very comfortable in all types of water, I love swimming -- whether it's a pool, crossing a large lake, swimming from a boat to the beach, etc. I don't know all types of swimming (breast, back and front crawl are enough for me) and I'm definitely not perfect, but I'm comfortable.

Same here! Love fresh water, especially. The ocean around here is kinda...er...scary/polluted/murky.

I love swimming and I've always competed until recently when life took over. I was in my universities swimming team and swam competitions regularly. Now I'm just too busy to keep up with it although I do enjoy swimming for leisure as and when I get chance!

I suck at swimming but I love being in water. I haven't actually been swimming in ages.

I always tend to forget to breathe when I am swimming and it just messes me up.

But yeah, I can't. Which is a shame because I actually like the water, what's more I went to a primary school that had a pool and attended lessons the whole time I was there. Only problem was this SAME pool was where I had a near-death experience at the age of 5, when one girl decided, for reasons known only to her, to repeatedly kick me so that I went under at the deep end, causing me to almost drown before I was pulled out. From then on every lesson was spent pretty much keeping an eye out in case she tried to pull anything like that again, especially seeing as she was often placed in a row near me when we were swimming laps. So not a lot of actual swimming learned. I did eventually manage to make some progress towards the end of primary school, but then it was time to leave and I didn't have ready pool/water access after that.

I would like to learn, but nowadays I have the stiff joints and mobility problems, and it's unlikely I would be physically capable.

I'm not particularly good at swimming, I can do front crawl and a poor breaststroke, but nothing else. I tend to swim for a bit, then stop to take a breather, then carry on. Lots of times. I enjoy it though. It also seems to left my spirit afterwards!
