We talked about this in my English class, so I thought I'd bring the discussion here. And by the way, we aren't talking about derogatory words when we say words we don't like.

As much as I hate to say it, I like to use "queer" in it's original meaning, just to remind people that it once meant odd. I also enjoy using "figures" whenever something happens that I should have seen coming. But as for the word itself, my favorites have to be "insipid" and "vapid", so I use them to describe people I find to not be particularly smart.

As for words I don't like, for some reason, I don't like it when people use the word "tired." I don't know why, I just do.

Uh... I actually love the forbidden 'c' word... which is why a lot of people at the high school don't like me.
To me, words are just words and while they can be used for good, when words are used for bad they don't mean anything anymore. Rather than a tool, they become a scapegoat.
But that word technically isn't English... it comes from German

I also love the word 'pneumonaultramicroscopicsilicovalvolcanoconeosis'

I don't think I have any "favorite words", but I would be just fine if no one ever used the word "irregardless" every again, because NO ONE uses it correctly.

That's because it's impossible to be used correctly
The prefix (ir-) means not, and the suffix (-less) means without, irregardless is a double negative. Which is why 'irregardless' is listed in dictionarys as a "incorrect" or "nonstandard".

Well I love the word floccinaucinihilipilification because.. I dunno.

But my favorite word would probably be "the" because people have such a hard time giving a definition of it. XD

My least favorite would probably be C U Next Tuesday.. *hint*

I don't know why but Wonderwall just made me exuberantly happy.. sorta XD

I like using 'regardless', but I completely forgot that 'irregardless' ever existed.
I like 'regardless' because I like to go off topic to prove and support a point I'll be making in the future of my argument.. but doesn't necessarily pertain to the topic I'm discussing at that moment :icon_bigg

And yeah, I argue for the sake of arguing
I think it's an open minded thing.

  12. I like all words... but some of my favorites are ethereal and brevity. I also like a lot of words that I have no idea how to pronounce, because I read them but never hear people say them. For example, I loved the word prescient (pree-si-ent) before I looked it up and realized it was prescient (preh-shent).

  13. (Sorry for the double post)
I thought of some more: Serendipity, avarice, aceldama.

Some words that annoy me are weird, ostentatious, snooty, sigh.

I like most other words

I don't exactly have any favourite phrases/words but I hate the phrase

    "power nap"

I don't really know why, but I just hate it when people say it. It sounds so... Gung-ho-ey and wannabe.

I know! It drives me absolutely bonkers when people say things they think are words, without thinking about grammatical rules. (Ex. irregardless, etc.)

And words like "intenser," "intensest," while words, don't sound right, and remind me of my hick relatives, where "more intense" and "most intense" should be used. Grrrr....I'm such a grammar snob...

But I love the word "horrid" and I probably say "fuck" too much, but you can't help it when you hear it every day of your life.
