    Fairly simple.

What is the best compliment somebody has told you? Do you feel it was honest or warranted? Did it come out of the blue, or did it follow something you had said, done, or told?

When the director of a department of our university said to me that I am one of the pride of our school. That coming from a high positioned person means so much to me. I literally blushed after hearing that. She said that to me after we released the second issue of an Institutional Comics where I am the Editor in Chief. How I wish I can replay that magical moment. Its so surreal.

A 90-something-year-old Alzheimer's patient in my grandma's nursing home wing stopped me as I was walking by and said "oooh, tall, dark, and handsome."

    Bless her heart.

A really good teacher I had once told me I was "wise beyond my years". It did sort of seem like it came out of the blue, but I'm sure he had good reason to say it and I've never forgotten it

My counsellor said I'm a very intelligent, mature and dedicated person, and that I have a beautiful skin colour. She said it after I'd said I was insecure about my skin colour a few years ago.

Something a girl once handed to me on a slip of paper when class ended. She was a transfer student I think, and we never met again:

    Your mind is beautiful.
    Your being is unique.
Share yourself for the benefit of all.

The best compliment that I received is trivial to me (as I don't remember it), it was most likely warranted, and it probably followed something I did. People don't really complement me out of the blue. Criticism, on the other hand...

"You're the most level-headed and decent of your siblings."

That's actually came from many people though.

I attended my high school award ceremony in order to accept one of those academic achievement awards that they toss out like candy these days. In fact, I was voted the accomplished student by the English department on campus. I've received praise for my writing ability all throughout my life, but that was the first time that it was personal in a sense. Listening to my past instructors give individual speeches about my work and potential was so humbling, especially since I hadn't really cared for most of them until that point. So, I would say every one of the compliments I received on that night.

I could talk about my appreciation for the compliments I have received about my appearance because of my past, but that would just get sentimental and nauseating.

It really depends what perspective I take whether it was the "best" compliment, since it wasn't the one with most magnitude. But the compliment that's meant the most to me recently was when me and my flatmate were in the kitchen; I made a throwaway remark about being "a cookie-cutter southerner" and he replied saying "I don't think you're cookie-cutter anything" (in a positive way). I took it as a compliment. It kind of made me happy since it showed me I do have a distinct personality, once I get to know people who I click with enough to be expressive, and that they like it. It gave me a lift because I sometimes wonder if I'm interesting to people or who this "me" is.

I have reason to believe it was genuine, since it's not the only occasion he's complimented me and we're generally on good terms. As I say... there are a few other candidates I might have chosen, but this one is the most memorable/personal, so...

An older coworker told me "That's why we hire smart people like you"
    And I inwardly beamed

That I'm going to make someone very happy one day  It came out of the blue from a dear friend I was supporting when the were coming out.

    @Kaiser.
Is the first line in your original post the complement you got?? I'm unsure :S Please Clarify.

No, lol. It's in reference to the topic question itself.

The best compliment I've ever received, would have to be:

"I don't know what I'd have done without you."

I've heard it quite a few times in my life, or some variation of it. Basically, people tell me how much they appreciate what I've said to or done for them. This usually is in the form of providing insight or comforting words, or aiding in resolving an issue of theirs.

But some other top contenders would be:

Anytime anyone acknowledges who I am, and speaks to the woman within. It's nice to be accepted.

Anytime somebody tells me, I've made them smile/laugh/feel better, and they show it. Seeing somebody's face light up, their voice perk up, or their mood lifted, is wonderful payment. I love me some e-hugs and e-cuddles, and e-kisses are the best, too.

Anytime others acknowledge the progress I've made in life. It is very hard sometimes, to refrain from old habits, because many times I feel, nobody notices or cares, and when that happens, I become susceptible to the influence of former tendencies. It's nice to receive that pat on the back, because it's like a checkpoint to total recovery.
