What are some symbols that the gay community may use, for example, XM radio has a GLBT channel, its sign is a blue square with a yellow equal sign in it, I've seen the same thing as bumper stickers. Any thoughts?

That sounds like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) logo that you described. I couldn't find it on the XM radio listings, but I think that is symbol to which you are referring.

The mission of the HRC is to work towards equality for LGBT citizens. I am speculating, but I would believe that the equal sign is representing the equality that they seek. I have no idea why the group selected the color scheme nor the square that surrounds the equal sign.

For other symbols, Wikipedia has an interesting entry on the LGBT Portal about symbols used by the LGBT community.

If they EVER made the 'gay symbol' a rainbow I think I'd go back in the closet just out of embarrassment lol. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Only as a stereotype, I'm sure most gay people don't associate rainbows with being gay, I certainly don't, for me the rainbow is a symbol of gay stereotyping, you may aswell throw some pink flowers in there lol :d

Yep, all rainbow symbols are for gay.
The rainbow freedome flag has 7 different color with different meanings, like Red is Life, Yellow is Sun, Orange is Healing, Green is Nature, Pink is Sexuality....... All gay people have these personailty in them so it does fit them as a significant symbol.

Triangles are another symbol, especially Pink ones
    [IMG][IMG]
The Lanbda is a cool one, I just found out, it is the symbol for Gay and Lesbian's Rights
    [IMG]
Another one as everybody knows, The Double-Male Sign

    hhmmmm....

Well, I dont like rainbow flags but not rainbow words.
Ack rainbow things make me feel happy and proud of myself. I feel more confident with my rainbow rubber band lol

  10. Gah I cant keep track of these stereotypes anymore, too many for me to count:dry:. But i agree with you, the whole rainbow thing is a symbol of stereotyping, for me. When I see an actual rainbow, gay people aren't the first thing that come to mind

Of course the actual rainbow wont make you think of the gay people. I never said a rain bow is a symbol for gay, but it;s colors that potrait on other symbols

Haha yeah I think I'll lay off the stereotypes now, it's all I seem to say lately :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

As long as the rainbow makes others happy I guess it can't be TOO bad, just don't expect me to buy the flag hehe

  14. No i know thats not what you meant, I was going along more with what BILL was saying.

Rainbows are overdone but they're hardly stereotyping. And EVERY gay person I know recognises the rainbow as a gay symbol, so it's probably worth getting used to.

Just for everyone's edification, the modern rainbow flag only has 6 colours, actually. Originally it had 8 and then they dropped 2 for various reasons.

I still love rainbows. I actually have my nails painted in a rainbow right now.
    *feels really really gay*

I also almost bought a gay pride rainbow flag -_-...mom stopped me because we were in a flea market and I'd "get killed by a ton of crazy rednecks..." to which I replied, my own people wouldn't dare harm me...
