Hi everybody, my school organises an anti-discrimination week (next week), and on Tuesday the theme is homophobia. As you can imagine, I immediately volunteered, with a few other friends, to help make this day awesome! :icon_bigg We'll have a table right by the main entrance of the school and we need to get people's attention. We'll make colourful banners with slogans on them but we have yet to find the actual slogans. Images could work too, we just need people to want to know more about homophobia, and to be interested in the issue! Personally, I'll be focusing on the sub-theme of insults such as f*g or d*ke and the use of expressions such as "That's gay!" and how these can hurt certain people. I'll try to inform people on this issue and, hopefully, they'll refrain from using these expressions after that! If you have any ideas, feel free to share! (Even if they are not slogans related of course!)
I saw some shirts that said "gay? ok by me!" at a campus not to long ago. I think it started at some University so the shirts may be out there on Cafepress.com or something.
Yeah, T-shirts are a good idea, we could have some rainbow letters on them, or something that could catch people's attention. Any more slogans ideas though?
I haven't exactly got any suggestions, but maybe some inspiration? The Stonewall charity here in the UK uses "Some people are gay. Get over it!", which sounds confrontational at first - but it's been successful because a lot of people found it amusing. They recently ran a "GAY - Let's get the meaning straight!" campaign against the word 'gay' being used as a slur, which I thought was pretty clever.
Slogans aren't easy to develop. That is why copywriters get paid. Here is an idea I shamelessly stole from a poster I saw somewhere and rewritten to LGBT context (it was originally for something else I can't remember): Code: GUYS: the NAKED truth about HOT lesbian GIRLS is that, They LIKE TO HAVE SEX with other girls Not WITH YOU Horrible, I know, I can't think of a better one at the moment. But the typography and the caps will catch people attention at first glance, and then they see the tiny letters, and they will read it a bit more. Also, the vertical setup is pretty nice to use for T-Shirts. Make several slogan in the same style, each for a different LGBT group. I will post again if I have a better idea.
When the Westboro Baptist Church comes to town with their homophobic picket signs, people come up with some pretty clever counter-protest signs. Here's one of my favorites:
I've read some good ones during my homophobic-jerk-insulted-me days, I keep them salved on my PC for when I need... "Proud to share love not hate." "I chose to be gay the same day you chose to be straight." "I hate the word Homophobia, it's not a phobia, you're not scared. You're an asshole." "It's all Fun and Gay 'till someone loses their rights." If there are some whovians:
That reminds me of "Homophobia is gay," which I've heard before. Just a thought. Not everyone likes it.
Myself, I'm rather fond of "oh, don't be such a homophobic asshole!" Catchy, eh? (Oh, btw, Leuger, I love my "Gay? Fine by me!" shirt. I alternate it for special events with my "I Can't Even Think Straight!" rainbow t-shirt.)
I made one just now it's called " Mind your damn business homophobe!!" Or "who died and made you're ass God " what do you guys think ?:icon_bigg
"I am more flaming than a bag of hot cheetos. If you don't like it, don't eat me."(a little vulgar but whatever) "I'm so queer but it helps me take the wheel and steer." "Liking the same sex is not a choice but homophobia is." "Just because I like guys doesn't mean I like you. Get over yourself." "Lesbians, gays, bi's, and trans., you must meet our demands."(ok probably going to fine tune that one)
