These are the reasons why my friends think I'm not actually gay. I like Slipknot (the heavy metal band)... The other gay guy in my year (year 11) loves shopping, dancing, you know, the usual. I like being different to the stereotypes that homophobic people such as my parents would link gay people with. Anyone else feel this way or is completely different to the stereotypes? I speak with a masculine voice, Im obsessed with cars and supercars, and I like heavy metal (note: I'm not gothic or emo like the sterotype of metal listeners, just plain ol' Matt.) I hope people don't take offence to this because I'm not trying to say that being camp or liking shopping or dancing is wrong, be whoever you wanna be. The only one who can change you is you. Being masculine is what my straight friends like about me, (boys will be boys) and they said they wouldn't like it if I suddenly left them and started only hanging out with girls. They even occasionally forgot I'm gay within the first few months of my coming out! anyway, nothing special about this thread. Just wanted a bit of chit chat and wondering if any of you guys are or feel the same as me! (!)

Yeah, I don't really fit the stereotype. I work maintenance part time, go to uni full time in politics. I play video games when I got downtime, my voice is "normal" and most of my friends are straight males.

I'm with the OP though when saying if you are the stereotype, that's great, good on you for being you.

It does annoy me that because I don't exhibit the stereotype that I can't possibly be gay to some people though.

Your orientation is nothing more than your orientation. There are guys that stick to the stereotype as if it was their only way to exist. But there also are feminine guys too, be they hetero or homo or whatever.

I'm not your "stereotypical" gay either, I like to dress well but in a more hip hop fashion or just a hoody and a baggy, my voice's kinda deep (and I hate it when people purposefully speak with an higher pitch... I can't stand high sounds x) ), I love rap music and love to rap, I'm what you would call a Geek etc... But I kinda have a feminine side too, I love cute things, romance, I tend to feel better hanging out with girls, I love Kpop, I don't drink beer, I don't like sports unless I'm the one playing, I don't give a damn about cars etc...

Just, with the way you talk about it, about your friends liking you masculine side... Don't play a role just in order to be accepted (and that advice goes for anyone), if you naturally are masculine: Good for you, your friends like you for who you are. But if you force yourself to be masculine, because that's the way we've all been taught ever since we were kids... That can't be a good thing.

Yes, I also am not a stereotypical Filipino gay. Here gays are very flamboyant (voice and movements) and likes dancing and shoping and shizznits. But we are different, I am more of a nerdy guy. I play computer games (especially League of Legends), active volunteer in the university, and do alot of multimedia artworks. I also do act and speak masculine, since my parents and my relatives are homophobic.

I'm not a specialist in metal, but I do appreciate it as much as I appreciate dancing to Avicii.

What's your favorite album and song of theirs?

Yeah, I don't fall into that many gay male stereotypes. Most of the people I've come out to have told me that they never would have suspected it, but no one's told me that I'm not actually gay because of it.

I listen to heavy metal & wear band shirts (Up the Irons!). I have zero fashion sense. I have a deep voice. I play sports. I love gaming. I suppose that would make me quite "masculine?"

I was once accused by another gay guy of putting on an act of being straight, which to me is BS. I can only act like myself.

My gayness approves of your choice. LOL. I used to love Duality, but nowadays I'm more smarter :/ so The Negative One and The Devil in I are my favorites. It is kinda difficult to pick a favorite, though.

Mine is Silhouettes. I remember at the the New Year's Eve 2013/2014 the DJ in the club played this song several times and every time it was incredible. The crowd just went wild.

Umm..I am all over the place.

Gay/bi stereotypical characteristics: I am not mechanically inclined at all. I know car basics enough to not get taken advantage, but you will rarely ever see a wrench in my hand. I like Lady Gaga, Avicii, Macklemore, techno, the Smiths, Lorde, Garbage, and Adele. I like to buy flashier bright clothes now. My best friends are all girls. I tend to cry a lot. I naturally talk with my hands.

Masculine or "straight traits": I played baseball for 13 years of my life and love watching any sport for the most part except wrestling/MMA. I am a messy. I hate to clean, I hate to cook. I have no problem in getting into a debate face to face with someone and exerting how I feel. I love pizza and fattening foods, and I have the waist line to prove it. I still can crush on girls sometimes. I have a deep voice and big hands.

I like having long hair and wearing a lot of pink, even my purse is pink! I doubt a lot of lesbians are Taylor Swift fans. I'm not into sports either. The only stereotype I fit is not wearing heels. Really pretty but they look so uncomfortable.

hey, welcome dude, i'm somewhat similar. i love heavy metal bands like slipknot, bolt thrower, iced earth, hypocrisy, goatwhore, dark tranquility, vader and all that. i also been told that i got a bass voice and not much like the "other gays". i got straight friends too and they don't mind it as well, consider that luck. it sucks when you have these steretotypes go around a lot, people sure like to make a quick judgement on others. it's nice to know that there's other people like us =P

Ah, stereotypes. They are ridiculous. Just be you.

I can't say I personally don't fit them though. My behaviour and speech is quite androgynous. As is my look. However I "walk and move like a man", and I certainly am not a flaming queen. Unless I am fanboying. Then the queen comes out.

But I am pansexual, not gay.

Edit: Ooh, Just noticed people listing what stereotypical traits they have. Let me join in!

Gay stereotypes: I'm a crossdresser, love makeup and doing my nails, love fashion, like scarfs and feather boas, like looking androgynous... Plus the aforementioned inner queen sometimes comes out to play.

Manly straight guy stereotypes: Emotionless, rational thinker, hates romance films and "chick flicks". I also enjoy fixing things and am fascinated with the inner workings of various electronic/mechanical things. I'm a (mostly retro) gamer too.

Really, stereotypes are stupid, and are different in each culture. For instance I have met many straight Japanese men who enjoy listening to female pop singers (which are wayy more cutesy and girly in Japan than the west). It's not considered a gay stereotype there.

Everyone, regardless of sexuality, has both masculine and feminine traits. And in my opinion, being balanced is the best thing someone could be.

Yeah me too,man Everyday when I wake up I do 5000 push ups. I eat nails with NO milk for breakfast because every masculine male has to have iron. Also I make sure that I spit anywhere in public just so everyone knows how macho and disgusting I am.

I hear you man. I'm the same way. I like death metal and nu-metal and... well basically any form of metal. I like cars like Muscle cars and Retro Japanese sports cars. Most of the gays if not the rest of them basically like the opposite of what I like. The only thing we like that happens to be the common interest is men. I'm the only gay man to ever play in metal bands in this town. And it pisses me off that I'm the minority in my local community of minorities. I feel your pain. And a lot of my friends think I'm straight. Then they end up looking through my Netflix Queue, and that's when the questions start...

I've heard that us "straight acting" guys get that a lot from other gay men because they think we're trying to fit in with the straight crowd. I have yet to encounter that myself, but I'm with you. We are the way we are, whether we act masculine, feminine, or somewhere in between.

For the OP, I definitely don't fit into the common stereotypes for gay men since I act pretty masculine in general. In fact just about all the people I've come out to were really surprised since they never questioned their assumptions that I was straight.
