Hello everyone, my friends and I are starting a softball team and one of the names we came up with was Brokebat Mountain. I am only posting on here to see if any gay people find this name offensive, because our goal is to not offend anyone, rather come up with a clever name.

It doesn't really make sense to make unless it's a gay softball team or at least a gay friendly softball team. Basically, it's not a great pun unless it has something to do with homosexuality. Not offensive if it does. If it's just straight guys well people might think you're gay.... Not offensive still.

Definitely not offensive to me. However, if this is a high school team, you may not want to go with that considering that the movie was R rated, and quite explicit at times.

Thanks for the replies, and no it is not a high school team just a co-ed recreation league team.

Brokebat sounds like a bad omen for a baseball team. Just saying.

I didn't know Empty Closets was the supreme authority of the entire sexuality spectrum...

It's your softball team, do what you want with it. I suspect you may get teased for the name, but you know, that's your call. I'm sure somebody might find it offensive, especially if the team is a bunch of heterosexuals, only using it in an attempt to be "funny".

I think Austin summed it up well, though. And I agree with the whole 'Brokebat = bad omen', unless you're going for irony. Then, carry on.

Well I've been calling myself gay for at least a month, so I feel entitled to speak on behalf of all gay people.

    I'm not offended.

I think it's an awesome name! It would be even better if it was mostly gay players but I think it works no matter.

Read this as Brokeback Mountain lol. Never saw the movie, but the pun is very clever. If not seen in an offensive manner, the name can convey acceptance which is what the world truly needs.
I disagree that it would make more sense with lgbt players. If there is, it's fine, but if it's mostly straight-identifying players, the message of acceptance is made incredibly more powerful. Straight people embracing lgbt in an activity where all sorts of people can relate to and find peace and comfort makes me very happy, and as a consequence, accepted.
Usually, the straight people you get are homophobic, but this team is different. It has potential to be more than just a co-ed softball team, it can be a light-hearted nod to social issues.
The name out of the context of lgbt is also pretty cool. Brokebat; sounds like someone hit a homerun! That's a hard-hitting team I would love to cheer on.

Hilarious. When I looked at the thread, I thought it was a misspelling and about the movie. I'm glad I clicked on the thread. Very funny.

Same here lol. I don't see it as offensive; quite the contrary, it opens up its members for the opinions of others about gay people. But if that's not a problem, I like it.
