I was in Sea Scouts for 12 years I got my RYA safety boat, day skipper and PB instructor qualifications, as well as skills you literally couldn't buy. I think everyone should do it, despite how 'uncool' it may seem to others.
There was a group connected with the US Navy when I was a teen. If I remember right it was called "Navy League Air Cadets". They met at Glenview Naval Air Base in the northern suburbs of Chicago. That base closed years ago and is now a high $ subdivision and strip malls. I gave it a try along with a few other guys I knew, hoping to learn something about the Navy, airplanes and flying. It turned out to be standing inspection, marching and other authority type bullshit so we didn't stick around long. It was probably designed that way to weed out guys like us. Maybe if we played the game long enough we might have eventually learned about the things we were there for.
I've just started at the 347 squadron ATC and it's great. I've just learned standing inspection but I don't learn marching for another 3 months
*I* am not in the cadets, but I know a bunch of people who do. I want to work *for* the military services, rather than be *in* them. I hope you continue to have a grand time. Thankyou.
Hey, I'm in the British air cadets too, I've been in for over 2 and a half years and I absolutely love it!
i went through the Canadian Sea Cadet Program as a teen, and later i served as a Civilian Instructor and as an Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve teaching Cadets. i think all young people should at least try it but never force them. we all knew who was there because their parents made them come, they didn't want to be there and didn't get much out of the program. you do get skills and experiences you couldn't buy though. ---------- Post added 3rd Apr 2015 at 10:26 PM ---------- sooo biting my tongue here........ LOL (*hug*) ---------- Post added 3rd Apr 2015 at 10:35 PM ---------- another 3 months till you learn marching? i was in a division doing a march past my first night, doing it badly mind you but hey i was " marching" but then im in Canada, LOL
Yeah I haven't learn it yet but I have done Standing Inspection. I love doing it but I don't really want to go full time into the RAF, maybe, I'm doing it for skills like First Aid and stuff like that. It's great to know someone else is in the Air Cadets too
I was under house arrest, for 6 months, for refusing to participate in military or civilian service. I can't fathom why anyone would want to serve voluntarily. That said, I don't judge.
My friend tried to get me into it, but it ultimately wasn't my cup of tea. Being yelled at stresses me out too much, and I'm a pacifist, so.. That said, I know a shittonne of people who are in it, and a few of my pals are going straight into military after they graduate. Jfc, they never stop telling me about things that happened during their FTXs, and throwing shade at the other squadrons.
That sucks kem about being put under house arrest. I don't want to go into the fighting side of the RAf , I want to maybe go into machinary like what they put on the TV adverts. So far I haven't really been shouted at because we have like ununiformed privates.
