A lot of people say, "chinese food is made out of dog, cat, etc. meat"...People usually ignore that shit, and look at it as a common racist accusation...After all, things are different here in the western hemisphere...Dogs and cats are considered companions rather than food...

But now, it turns out that those racists were right, but for the wrong reasons...This morning, a chinese restaurant close to where I work was closed down for serving dog meat to eats customers...The police arrived, the employees were all arrested, and dead dogs were found in the kitchen...Even live dogs were found, most likely being held captive until they met their impending doom...It makes me wonder how many other chinese restaurants are doing this...Please keep in mind that this was in Mexico, an extremely awful country that I despise living in...So when I say chinese restaurants, I'm reffering to here in Mexico, not other parts of the world...Anyway, it looks like the xenophobes won this round...

P.S: There's a video of the findings on Youtube, but it's in Spanish, and contains somewhat disturbing material...So I can't post it here...

Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it. I heard Russians ate horse during the Battle of Stalingrad. The places here serve a "mystery meat" in cubes that definitely isn't chicken, pork, or beef, but I don't question it. Rather bland, chewy.

We shouldn't be shocked that they were using dog meat. We should be shocked about the conditions those dogs were held and slaughtered in, as well as the concerns about hygiene that seem to be coming across in OP's post.

Thing is I'm part Chinese but I've never heard of dog meat in any of the Chinese restaurants I've been to

You can get whale and horse meat here in Japan. I've tried the whale (not yummy enough to kill whales, they should really stop...) and I really badly want to try horse meat sashimi (and chicken sashimi)!

My uncle was born in Italy and said they ate cat meat. A Korean kid I went to high school with had dog meat soup. Different people, different way of doing things! I agree with Aussie though, the sanitation issues, false advertising, and the abuse of animals that were implied are definitely not good things and should be the real problem, not what kind of meat they were using.

Have to say, I agree with Kem.
It's a little hypocritical as I don't eat meat, but I genuinely don't see how dogs are somehow 'better' than cows or other animals. The dogs would probably have been bred in such terrible conditions that they would never become pet quality; they would never have been socialised, would probably have lots of health problems, and would likely not have been adopted even if they went to a shelter. If you put them to sleep, their body gets put in a freezer until they're sent off to be burned.

    Exactly.

I mean, we eat beef? We eat pork? Plenty of places in the world where that would be considered taboo or where it's even prohibited (often because of religious reasons).

Just in case it gets misconstrued, my point was: if you want to be consistent with your choices, try NOT eating meat at all, instead of going all out and cooking your pets.

Just a quick heads up, I wasn't grossed out by the fact that they were selling dog meat...After all, it's edible...I was just surprised because:
    A. They were advertising it as whatever it was they were advertising, but in reality they were feeding them something entirely different...
    B. There's people out there who will get grossed out, and probably even suffer mental distress...
    C. Like the above said, the dogs were most likely in poor condition, so they were probably unhealthy...
    D. Actually, that's about it...

Mexico: do cocaine and speak spanish? sounds like a paradise to me

China: dog eating communism? Not quite like paradise but...then again they have Buddha! wait...he was from Nepal, well anyway

    On a serious note:

Stricter control on restaurants?? Can't think of better decision atm. Banning all chinese restaurants will be stupid, chinese food USUALLY tastes great unless of course it includes cat soups, snakes and dogs etc. Their "great" treatment of animals is one of the major reasons why I'd avoid Asia.

Otherwise I am big fan of Japanese culture for a number of reasons.

Meat is meat, it's a bloody industry. I'm just thankful it's not me on the bad end of that knife.

I don't have a problem trying dog meat, as long as the animals were acquired legitimately (not stolen) and treated humanely.

We had the horse meat scandal over here in Britain but it didn't really bother me. As long as it tastes ok and is safe to eat it shouldn't matter what animal it comes from. Obviously I love my pets and wouldn't eat them but that's only because I've established a bond with them.

I agree that they should be treated humanely as well. They do have to live and it shouldn't be a life of suffering.

Yeah, and based on their attempts at hunting down local deer without a license, our local Chinese restaurant in my former Eastern Montana town was probably serving us deer.

Still tasted damn good, so what did we care?

Ya know one asian kid said he eat dogs and he also said in American egg rolls they're could be squirrels in them and I said really? Well they're tasty so if what he's saying is true then I guess I've eaten a squirrel.

I don't think the act of using dubious meat is limited to chinese people though...or any race for that matter. It seems like they are simply looking to make their profit by procuring their own meat and process it instead of going through official channel, then advertising it as something else to sell things easier. So anyone could have done that. The horse meat fiasco is an example.

As for the animal that the meat comes from, I don't think it matters, as long as the animal is treated with respect. It dies to be our food, and its body nourish us. The last thing we could do is to respect it and take care of it as well as possible, along with making sure its passing is swift and painless.

Westerners are weird. You eat all kinds of meat. Dog meat is no different.
