Does anyone else ever find someone on one of these forums that has been here forever and everyone seems to know them but you?

I dunno, it's pretty weird when you find someone and you're like 'why haven't I seen them around before?'

Some people are kind of EC famous, I guess

Yeah but famous members are usually also very active so you always stumble across them very soon.
    (aren't you a celebrity yourself?)

Other way around, actually. When I was on staff I was pretty familiar with most users, but since I left there's been a lot of growth I haven't kept up with.

I sometimes feel that I am that person you describe; like there is a layer of mist around me so some people are at least aware that there is something here, but they don't know what the heck it is. :eusa_shhh

This makes it sounds as though there is an exclusive EC A-list.

Honestly, after you spend a couple years on the site, you stop paying attention to join dates and who is knew and who is not. 95% of the people who were active and that I interacted with in my first two years here are gone. If they were popular then, very few of you here now know them.

It is all about how involved you are and the impression that you make on people. Whether you make people laugh, are very positive, give great advice, consistently weigh in on subjects, etc. Those are the members that are usually appreciated the most

This. So much this. I like to say that I'm "EC ancient" and the vast majority of people I was familiar with when I first joined the forum have all moved on. EC is very dynamic and ever-changing. Someone who was very active and well-known at one point will be completely forgotten by another if they stop posting.

That's just part of being a long-termer. I haven't even been here two years and the turnover has been quite high.

I'm kind of uncomfortable with any sort of "EC famous" or similar label. There are people who post pretty seldom, but say really powerful and meaningful things when they post... and there are people who might post 50 posts a day but really don't have a whole lot meaningful to say. And everything in between.

With a community of 60,000 or whatever it is by now, there are bound to be people that will perhaps be more visible than others. When I was in college, there were people you saw around campus all the time because they happened to be involved in a lot of events and activities, and others whose names you saw, but never saw them, because they were behind-the scenes. And still others you ran into rarely or very occasionally.

I don't think it really makes any sort of meaningful difference. Everyone is here more or less for the same reason: We all have struggles or issues surrounding being gay. None of us (well, none I've run into) are perfect, whole, infallible, all-knowing, or faultless. All of us are here to connect with and learn from each other. To me, at least, it doesn't matter if someone joined yesterday or in 2005.

    What an interesting thread.

I post quite a bit. I've slowed down. I post some stupid and sarcastic things. I THINK I say some meaningful and/or helpful things every now and then. I also suppose I post things people don't agree with and are not the most popular in that they are not aligned with "current, prevailing" thought.

I've never been popular. Why start trying now?

I really don't know who's on this A-list. I never even thought about it that way.

It's something I notice a bit, here and on other forums and websites. I think it's just something that naturally happens in society. Before I made an account here I spend a month or so just reading through posts, and some people's avatars became quite familiar to me, even if I didn't really look at people's usernames.

Interests change over the years. Some people take a year to come out and then leave after they are successful. Maybe others leave due to different "personality conflicts".

I'm not saying there's an elite group or anything, it's just weird sometimes when someone turns up on a thread and everyone seems to know them, and you're like "how is it even possible that I've never seen you on here before?"

    That's fine.

I often wondered if there was an A-list but never really dwelled on it. In fact, you verbalized something that has gone through my head a time or two.

All of these. Add different values and different approaches to the list ... and even more reasons.
