More older siblings = more likely to be LGBT?

I don't know if this theory holds up, but I just thought I'd ask about it. After all, I've heard about the older brothers theory. I, personally don't have any brothers and I only have one older sibling who is my sister, so I know the theory doesn't apply to me.

Does anyone happen to know if this theory been proven or disproven? And if it is proven, does that mean that every family with a lot of old male siblings has an LGBT person in it?

I believe it only applies to males and has been something largely looked at in Canada and Italy from what I remember.

This wiki article seems decent at explaining it further:
Fraternal birth order and male sexual orientation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also if you live in Canada(or understand internet pings better than I) the CBC did a piece about this on the Nature of Things. Survival of the Fabulous - The Nature of Things
    ----------------------

As for me I'm the oldest.

From reading the theory it certainly adds up, it's more interesting with twins whereby if one is gay there is a 70% chance the other is too. It does go a long way to show that sexuality is determined way before we're born.

I heard that the chance increases around 2% for each older male sibling, but to be honest I don't really know what I'm talking about.
    Anyway, I'm an only child.

I only have a older sister.

I do have a relative on my moms side of the family that had 6 sons and 2 daughters and no one in the family is gay.

It actually is a fact that males who have more older brothers are more likely to be gay. This does not apply to females. There's a lot to it, but it is statistically accurate that men with more older brothers are statistically more likely to be gay. I myself have 2 older brothers, and many gay/bi men I know have at least 1 older brother.

Though, of course, this isn't the only way that homosexuality is caused. There's several other factors that determine it. This is simply one of the major ones.

One more thing: First born males will have a 2% chance of being gay. The chance increases for each younger male sibling. (The percent at which the chances increase at varies greatly depending on the researchers)

there is a bbc documentary regarding this.. its there on youtube as well.. where the guy tries to find out the reason behind his being gay.. he concluded with this finding of the odds being gay increases as one has more older siblings.

I'm the oldest and my younger brother is straight. One of my best friends is also the oldest & is gay. My current & last bfs were the youngest with straight older siblings.

Cracked mentioned this phenomena in an article about birth order from a few years ago.

I was an only child until I was 8yrs old, then had three older siblings thru marriage, but they were/are all so much older (as in old enough to be my parents, in their 30s or older when they came into my life) that they had lives of their own and barely impinged on mine for the most part. I also have three younger siblings, one by marriage and two by birth who came along after my mom married my dad.

I'm afraid I don't really buy this theory.

This is one of those topics that comes up like left handed/right handed or finger size.

Most of the time, I have seen the youngest or younger kids be the ones who are LGBT.

Then, I have sometimes seen where the first-born is LGBT and the rest of the kids aren't, yet they are spaced close together and the gender mix varies greatly.

I'm sure you could find studies that both support and refute this.

For example, at 52% in one study of identical twins, I'm a little skeptical that that's high enough to fully support that the explanation is genetic.

  16. I have several older sisters (I'm the youngest child); this doesn't apply to me (or others, really).

It's not fully genetic. (There's quite a few things that influence sexual orientation). It's a mix of many things. Many times, one twin is left handed while the other is right handed. There's also multitude of times where one twin develops a genetic disorder while the other doesn't. Identical twins can still have different gene expressions after the egg splits. Keep in mind that identical twins are not clones, and they can and often do possess difference personality traits. The genes that cause homosexuality would be present in both twins, but inactive in one of them.

Yeah, it only applies to males, and regarding older male siblings (not adopted, or half siblings). Definitely not the rule, since there are many who are an only child, the oldest, or have older sisters. Just goes to show you how many variations and possibilities exist out there.
