The proper way to name a cat, is to wait to see what personality it has, and name it according to its personality.

    For example--

One kitten I was given was dark grey and she got into a lot of things she should not have gotten into. And regardless of how I tried to train her, she kept getting into the same things over and over again.

So I called her Pandora. As in Pandora's Box.

Wait to see what kind of cat personality it will have. And you should find a much better suited name that way.

I hate people who just name their pets idiotic names without getting to know WHO they are naming.

I mean, really.........there are enough "Fluffy's" in the world who are vicious people haters, and "Shadow's" who are full of life and happiness.

    Anyway, thats my 'two cents'.

I've actually pitched in the name India for my friend's dog and that's the name they ended up chosing. I'm so proud of myself because it looks adorable on her. Good luck on your new kitten! I still remember when I picked up my sweet little Ginevra at the train station (she was coming from a cat shelter seven hours away from where I live) on May 19th 2013. Sweet memories!

I have to agree with MisterSparkles...there is a LOT to be said for waiting to name the kitten. That was an approach my family took more often than not, although it could sometimes drag out to extremes. I can remember one time my mother commenting that we'd better decide on a name ASAP because if we didn't the kitten would grow up thinking she was named "the kitten." I think only one cat who was actually named before coming in, although that was a tentative thing. The kitten was already known, but it was a case of the name catching my mother's imagination.

Not a bad point. Although I will have to say I could easily see myself using Fluffy for a cantankerous cat as act of irony.

I have also sometimes said that I could see myself getting a black and white cat and a canary. The canary would "Sylvester" and the cat would "Tweety."

Just wait and you'll find a name. My friend got a kitten a few years ago and it had no name for 3 weeks until a white star grew on her black chest, so she was called 'star'.

"India" on the condition that you switch some letters around to make it "Idina" after the very talented singer.

Congrats on getting a kitten! They grow up so fast but omg the cuteness!

I second (or third?) What Mister Sparkles said. When I got my kitty I had all these possible names for him, but then I didn't use any of them. You know how they say to bring the kitten home and introduce him/her to one small room? It's so they don't get overwhelmed by their surroundings, so they know where their food bowl and litter box is, etc. Most experts advise keeping the kitten in a small room for about a week.

Well, my kitten jumped out of his carrier right away, did a few laps around my bedroom, and was crying to get out and explore the rest of my apartment by that night. He was super bold, super friendly and incredibly cute! He still follows me to every room of the house, he won't let me go into the bathroom without him, and he parks himself by the front door and waits for me when I go out. He sleeps with me, he cuddles on couch with me, and he lets me know when it's play time.

So...while I was undecided on his name I called him Buddy, and it stuck. Because he really is my little buddy. :icon_wink

Most of my friends have cats who scurry into a bedroom and hide when they have company over...not Buddy. He likes to be front and center, demanding attention from my friends and demanding pets and hugs lol.

tl;dr - Personality makes it easy to name a pet. Good luck!

Thank you starlights  Your kitten seems to be so adorable & affectionate. I'll accept my kitten either way but I would love it to be so sweet as yours

    Effy after the giraffe toy.

Persius is my other choice if you're stuck for names
