Do you use the word "faggot" or "fag" casually? Do you use it to refer to yourself or other gay people?

I'm sure there have been other threads about the use of this word, but I wanted to ask a new one. This isn't just "what do you think of the word", but "how do you use it".

I don't think I ever use it personally. I don't call myself it and don't call others it. I have a gay friend who seems to use it when he's angry with other gay guys, then he'll call them "faggots". Otherwise, he won't use it under normal circumstances.

I tend to steer clear of using it because I know some people find it really hurtful, as they've had it used against them in a very nasty way. Personally it doesn't bother me toooooooo much, but I've never really had it used against me.

I use it to describe myself, and occasionally other Gay men...I don't understand what's so "hurtful" about it...

Because no one had used it on you as an insult and discriminated you when you were in your teens?

Anyway, I don't use that term because English is not my first language, nor it has any effect to me. My own language has its own colorful of lexicon for gay people, "faggot" is just another item on the list.

It's true that no one ever used it against me since I "passed" as straight, but I don't think that's the reason...

I used to. If there's one word that could be considered the verbal equivalent to a kick in the nuts (for guys), it's definitely "faggot".

Now I just see it as immature and homophobic.

No, I don't, and it's the same reason I don't go around calling my fellow black people "niggas" or "coons". I don't begrudge other black oeople for doing so, I just don't feel comfortable uttering a word a slave master used.

I don't swear/curse at all, and I think "faggot" is still a loaded word, very much like "nigger". In both cases, there are some double standards in who is "allowed" to use them, which I think is unfair. I much prefer the terms "gay" or even "queer".

Among my group of friends, we all call each other fags in a joking way. One of us was regularly called that in high school, and for us, it's just a way of taking a word that could be hurtful and turning into something that isn't.

I never use it, and none of my friends regularly do. When people use it in a homophobic way I always challenge it.

I never use it. I do use the word "queer" to define myself sometimes, and will also use it when making fun of homophobes.

Words are just the tool to communicate thoughts ideas feelings etc and of course have the power to harm

Even if you do sincerely feel like words can never trigger emotional reaction in you (which I'm sure really you don't) you can at least appreciate that they may have that effect on others

If I'm a pc bitch for not going round calling people nigger and faggots then ok but no I don't

I don't really care what people call me but I don't call others fag because I realise not everything feels the same
