Are Converse appropriate for prom?

So I'm most likely going to prom. Me, the teetotaler who hasn't gone to a school dance since grade 9. I'm actually a little bit excited, especially for the after-prom events (Camping at my girlfriend's cottage! With some really awesome people!)

My biggest concern, however, is what to wear. I'm super clumsy and can't stand uncomfortable shoes, so heels are out of the question. I'll wear flats if I must but I'm really into the idea of wearing Converse with my (as of yet nonexistent) dress. I'm due for a new pair anyway so I'd get some that match. My style has evolved to be a bit more edgy this year so I think I could pull it off, plus my girlfriend is going short-sleeve-shirt-and-bowtie so I wouldn't go all traditional prom on her. But is it too, shall we say, emo kid c. 2009? Is it an acceptable thing in 2015? Give me your thoughts please.

Honestly, wear whatever you want. Chucks are fantastic for any event, formal or otherwise. I wear mine almost every day.

Ummm no? I don't know what it's like in the US but here I wore a kilt and tweed jacket for my prom with polished black leather shoes, I'd imagine it's similar formal dress code.

I'd say that if you need to ask the question...then sure; wear anything.

Wear what you want. No one will remember in five years, anyways. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

If you're set on wearing Converse to a (semi?)formal event, then perhaps buy single-coloured ones without any obvious highlights etc., unless it goes well with the rest of your outfit.
The only pair of shoes I own are a pure black pair of converse, and as long as they're kept clean they pretty much are a go for any occasion, so yes- I do speak from experience.

Wear whatever you'd like. I'm sure they won't be too strict about it.

I say yes. But, you should check with your gf and make sure it's cool with her. Hers is really the only opinion that matters.

Well, Avril Lavigne is known for wearing Chucks with dresses.

Edit: I think you should dress the way you want to. It's cool to be different!

someone had a tux and a pair of ratty old sneakers one year i went, they didn't bar him at the gate or anything. To be honest I don't know why appearance matters to people sooo much

Make sure what you wear will not mark up the dance floor. Otherwise, go for it...

Well my prom was in 2006 so...maybe my opinion doesn't count because I'm too old? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Kidding.

Chucks are appropriate for any and all life events. Period.

I'm confused because this outfit seems to make sense on her...

If you wear uncomfortable shoes, you'll enjoy pain for long hours afterwards. Pain spoils the fun.

You can also get some cheap black ballerinas just for the day, but the Chucks look kind of cool.

I didn't go cos I think it's boring, but if I went, I would have probably turned up in casual clothing. I'm not big on formal attire. My one suit is cheap and I only use it for interviews, weddings and funerals.

Hell yeah! That's actually pretty common where I'm from. Couples will both wear brightly colored, clean, sneakers that match their color scheme. I actually knew a couple that wore high-top Nike shoes to prom. I think it looks dope. :icon_cool

Converse would be way more comfortable than heels anyways.

Why not? You do you~~ When I went to prom we had to check our shoes because they could be used as weapons... >.> That was an awkward and dirty night...
