My friend was discriminated against at the dentist as he came there with his bf. He was in a lot of pain and had to be referred to another dentist due to this bigot. From my friend's FB:

What would you if you were treated this way?

(You may choose more than one in the poll)

Sue him. By operating a business (a medical one no less!) he agrees to serve patients in a fair manner. He hasn't done that, which could endanger your friend if it were something serious. I've also got a good feeling that sexual orientation is legally protected. Have your friend talk to a lawyer at the very least.

In the off chance it isn't, there are plenty of sources who would eat that story up and do his reputation much deserved harm.

I'd lawyer up like it was nobody's business. Especially if it occurs in a small rural area, where they may be the only doctor for miles.

Whenever you open a business, especially one that is in the medical field, you are obligated to treat everyone who comes into your clinic with respect and decency.

This was in a suburban area about 20 miles southwest of Detroit. Sexual orientation is not covered in the area under legislation, but I would think this would qualify as pain and suffering.

I would be really pissed off and definitely tell my story, but I'm not one to make a big hairy deal about things. I would just walk away and find a new dentist. The dentist has free rights to bigotry, I suppose.

I'd lodge a complaint with the Michigan Board of Dentistry and write a negative review online.

I'd contact the national LGBT organization about this, and then the local branch of it. For one thing, I'd be reporting a homophobic act, which is what they do. For another, I know some of their volunteers and trust them to do the right thing and guide me throughout the rest of the process (lawsuit?). I doubt I could do it alone.

I wouldn't do anything. I'm too lazy for any of that stuff.

I would report it to an LGBT center and I would tell people not to do business there due to their discriminatory acts. If it was serious matter such as medical and there are equality laws in place that would hold the perpetrator accountable I would sue them. I want to be a lawyer too so bring it !

Word of mouth is more effective or maybe something on the Facebook or Twitter

Everything on that list (and more) except walking away.

By the way, how do you know that the rest of your patients are not on the closet, you fool...

Unless you were a lawyer, it'd be hard to prove this.

You could go off, rile up the public, come back and the dentist can act stupid. What do you do then?

Now, if the dentist still insists on his stance, well, things may work out in your favor.

I'd contact the Better Business Bureau and report him! He needs to be punished, and better people put in his place... disgusting

Knowing me, I would definitely tell people about it, spread the word, let people know that the dentist was a bigot. You want your freedom to discriminate? I have my freedom to try and shut you down.

My response to discrimination depends on the situation. For this situation, I'd likely bitch about it to all my friends and maybe post a review or whatever of the dentist somewhere public, so that people could decide if they want to boycott him. Mom calls that voting with your dollars. Or something.

But sometimes things happen where it's a little more grey.

I'd probably vent to people, but that's it.

  20. I feel like putting the business on blast on Facebook or Yelp is the best punishment.

I live in a neighborhood with tons of small businesses, owned by old traditional minded Vietnamese/Chinese people or idealistic millennials who are changing and breaking away from traditional norms, trying to compete with each other. If I experience total discrimination, then I'll just go to a different bakery froyo, crepe, shaved ice shop.

It's too inconvenient for me to report this to the authorities or protest. In this case, I would hurt them where it hurts the most, their money.
