How Old Does Microsoft Think You Are?

    Here is the thing:

how-old.net is a site created by Microsoft to demonstrate the capabilities of their new Face API, launched this week at the company’s annual Build Developer Conference. The Face API gives developers the ability to analyze an image, detect faces, and then complete a lot of bio-metrical nonsense tasks that don't mean jackshit to those of us who aren't developers. So just know that in order to illustrate this to the layman (namely: us) you can upload pictures of your breathing holes (along with the rest of your face, which is usually less essential than your breathing holes I know, but not in this case) to the site and it will try (and hilariously fail) to accurately determine your gender and your age based on the picture.

TL;DR Pictures go in, inaccurate predictions go out. SO in case you missed the first link, here's is a more unmissable link:

Now (that's a contextual "now," I'm actually speaking to you from a future in which you already visited the site) tell me, how old does Microsoft thinks you are?

    So far I've gotten:

    • 18 yrs. old
    • 27 yrs. old
    • 29 yrs. old
    • 30 yrs. old
    • 34 yrs old
    • 40 yrs. old

All of which pathetically missed the mark, but made for an amusing 6 mins. of my life.

Two things came to mind when I read this.......

    1. Any new technology is always flawed, greatly. There has to be a large scale program to "work out the bugs" in any new tech. This is probably one of their methods used to get the program working the way they want.

    2. Yet another ploy to get you to freely post your image online, in order for it to be categorized and filed away, for use by Microsoft or the government.

    Female, 27. Not bad!

MisterTinkles, Microsoft promises it doesn't store the images. Are you questioning your corporate overlords?

ETA: Apparently my face is more robot friendly than most other people on here. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

The joke is on them! I already freely post my images online! Although to be fair, I'm a bit of a slut (not to be confused with a whore, I'm not charging yet) so I can see the reservations of the non-slutty side. Being a slut is fun tho, I totes recommend everyone to join the slimy side.

All of the images I've used, bar two, have given me ages between 18 and 21. The two exceptions gave me 26 and 27. The most common age was 20.

In one of the images I used of someone else, there was a bottle of tomato ketchup, and apparently it was 31 years old. Yet it can't detect my dog's face, lol.

I got 36 and 46. So very far from my actual age. Man, if I look like this when I'm 46 I'll be very happy.

Seems Microsoft is WAY behind the times here in facial recognition software.

I mean, haven't the Brits been using this kind of program for years now, for their government CCTV ?

But was it a Ms. or a Mr. ketchup? Depending on the answer, I imagine hitting the bottom of the bottle to get the ketchup out could be a lot kinkier next time.

I mean 29's kinda close but, I'm pretty sure I still look young for my age?

I've done it a few times & the most frequent answer was 31-32, which is pretty damn exact.
However I also got a few younger- 27 being the youngest,
And wearing glasses added over 10 years- the oldest being 51!

Here is the photo where I look 79 y/o, apparently. I mean, I get that my face looks wacky as f**k but 79 is just too painful......

Me, giving something for free to Microsoft? Naw, don't think so...

They can't even get an OS for a bloody phone right, how the hell they expect to make a significant contribution to something like AI?
