Exploring root cause(s) for homophobia, akin to lemmings going over the cliff.

    Definition: Lemming are a small animals who will follow each other without question, sometimes over cliffs - falling to their death.

    Question: What are the root causes for homophobia? Yes it's generally viewed that one of three desert religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) are responsible. Desert religions are the tool to deliver the message, what are the root cause(s)? Seeking only below "the tool" answer(s).

    My answer. Distrust of others who are different. Fear of the unknown. Do not want to change - I'm comfortable the way I am. Competitive, my team will win over your team and my team is better than yours.

    Summary: distrust, fear, change, comfort, competitive.

    Wow neat comments. I'm surprised. I put a lot of thought (and beer) into the question.

    Desert religions are cool and they all teach us much. (I even own a Koran which I treat with the up most respect. (oh god I'm on the NSA list for sure now.)) But they are all sending their own version of mixed message(s) - homosexuality is bad.

    The very complex religions of native people's of America (USA) to some degree excepted homosexuality as NORMAL. Cabeza do Vaca one of the first Spanish (Christian) explorers of the New World documented homosexuality among'st the SAVAGES. (translated quote, "I saw something very repulsive [among the native people] namely, a man married to another.")

    I am 100% amazed by the social venturi effoct - people blindly following others (lemmings). It causes wars (Nazi's seizing power in Germany, sucking beautiful Germans into destruction, massive death, Spanish conquest of the new world, on and on.

    Yes, I think it's ultimately because homosexuality is different and unusual and sexual. Things that are different and uncommon are often looked down upon, but even more so if they are of a sexual nature. People always say "because religion!" when asked about the origin of homophobia, but then I want to know why the religion condemns it.

    I always thought it was because of sexism. People hate lesbians because they aren't sexually available to men, and people hate gay men because they put themselves in a "woman's" role.

    I am not going to comment on the religious aspect of it.

    What I will say is that for quite a few people who were homophobic, they were taught to act that way. That happened or they are old and had traumatic experiences with other boys or older men. Back in the 50's and 60's, the majority belief was that gay=pedophile and pedophile=gay. So if someone was abused, they make that connection. Unfortunately, many still hold to that philosophy.

    In addition, a few of the homophobes are trying to squash their own homosexuality. It may be a completely unconscious thing as well.

    Long story, short: not all homophobes are created equal.

    I have actually heard men say "If I had one night with you you'd turn straight." when speaking to a lesbian. I have also heard that gay men need to have "it wacked off, if they want to be a woman then let them look like it."

    Mind you I do live in middle of nowhere so there is a lot of sexism and homophobia, especially from the older generations.

    With respect to teaching people about pedophiles. My take: the underpinning layer under teaching fear of pedophiles is fear and control. The tool is "misinformation".

    With reference to squashing their homosexuality via anger and lashing out at LGBT community. Dido: I've read anger and homophobia are resultants of suppressing ones true identity. It's part of the complex anger process.
