Thanks to all these threads about foods, I was wondering if any of y'all liked salads and what would consist a "perfect" salad. What dressing would you use? Is this as an appetizer or main course?

    -----------------

For me, we buy a prepackaged organic salad blend at my grocery store that has a varied mix of (I did list some the ingredients :lol:slight_smile:: Red Romaine, Green Oak Lettuce, Lolla Rossa Lettuce, Little Gem Lettuce, Tatsoi, Baby Spinach, Red Chard, Red Mustard, Arugula, Frisse, Cilantro, Radicchio and other greens. To this, we then add raw broccoli and carrots, and some form of blackberries, blueberries, grapes, peaches or other fruit. Once served, I like to put some real balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Bonus points if I chilled the salad plate and fork beforehand .

This is mostly a before-main course salad (I believe some Europeans use salad as a "cleansing" dish after the main course), but if I want to make it more hearty, I don't mind adding some bourbon-glazed shrimp to it.

Greek salad with olive oil as dressing. I can eat it as a side dish or as the main meal. I have tried many different sweet and savory salads, but nothing beats the simplicity and freshness of the Greek salad.

Onions, sui choy, tomatoes, beets and chayote, carrots...

Maybe I can throw in some fruits, too, like cherries and pineapples and oranges and grapes and blueberries.

It might have become readily apparent that I've never really had a proper salad before so I just listed all the produce that I'm fond of and like. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I'm so glad you've asked. It's delicious. I was going to find a pic but I found something better...

Napa cabbage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Actually, I probably only called it that because that's what I'm used to hearing it called xD I've never heard it called anything else.

Baby bok choy is also delicious. I should've added that to my unorthodox "salad"/produce amalgamation.

Haha, I would have asked on your wall or private message, but since neither of those are an option since you're no longer staff...

Pretty sure the only time I've tried it is in Kimchi? It's pretty similar to "bok choy"? Not sure how common it is for people to eat it on its own, but wouldn't be opposed to trying it.

I actually only eat it cooked. Most veggies are not palatable uncooked to me, personally. My salad would totally consist of cooked veggies. EVERYONE, DIG IN! IT'LL BE DELICIOUS AND UNORTHODOX. (&&&)

It's like a really yummy and soft, noncrunchy lettuce when it's cooked in a certain way, which is why I liked it. Bok choy is more bitter but still a yummy vegetable, and kind of seems like a lettuce cabbage hybrid to me despite taxonomically being a cabbage. They're both in chinese non-fried rice dishes a lot, which is all that I eat at chinese restaurants for a few reasons.

This makes no sense. Why would you smother something already smothered in Caesar dressing with ranch dressing?

I *love* salad. The perfect one? Wow, no, there is no single perfect one. It'd be a whole list. They all tend to have delicate greens as well as romaine and/or spinach. But then they go lots of places, depending on whether there's meat (and I love salads with meat...Thai steak salads are amazing, though I've also enjoyed salads with grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, grilled salmon, or even ground beef or chopped ham). I can get into marinated tomatoes and cucumbers. I also enjoy things like snow peas, chick peas, edamame...also cheese. As toppings, I like sunflower seeds, raisons, slivered almonds, or (rarely) really amazing garlic croutons. I tend to go for creamier dressings...blue cheese is a stand-by.

Salad isn't even my food's food, because my food requires something more nutritious than crunchy water.

I'm pretty sure the word for crunchy water is "ice", not "salad". I dunno what veggies you've been eating, but they're some of the most nutritious things out there, along with fruit. Dairy and meat really aren't as great as people make them out to be.

Technically, salad is supposed to be served after the main course, as etiquette writer Miss Manners told me (and all her other Gentle Readers). Apparently, IIRC, the "before main course" approach was something that started in restaurants, and people started emulating, perhaps thinking a restaurant would do things "the right way."

Of course...the way things are, these days, any sort of sit down dinner is doing better than what many Americans ever manage most nights.
