My host-brother was confirmed today (I didn't go to the ceremony. I'm atheist, so it goes against my lack-of-beliefs system, but my host-family is cool with that).
Anyways, afterwards they had (and still are) a big reception.
The people invited are a bunch of people who speak very little English, and speak German too complicated and WAY too fast for me.

It goes without saying I was looking for an escape route the moment it started...

I saw my chance when dessert was served.
I ate so much chocolate mousse praying my stomach cramps would kick in faster if I ate a lot. Thank god they did!

So now I may be in throes of pain... but I escaped!

Ugh... no, not a thread about lactose intolerance. Right now, I'm reading about the action of beta-D-galactosidase (the enzyme you lack) for my bio exam on Monday...

There are beta-gal tablets available (produced by certain bacteria) - they aren't identical to human beta-gal but they serve the purpose. However I guess that they aren't cheap...

I can get access to the beta-gal at college if I really try, I've had to use it before for some tests (namely the capacity of common yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae of fermenting different sugars)

Indeed, Amy. From what I know that's the commercial name of beta-gal.

As a side note, I'll include what I just read... lol

I've never been tested for lactose intolerance, but I try to never eat or drink dairy because it always makes me feel sluggish and I break out too.

Soy and Rice Milk for the win!

    It's nasty. >.<

When I younger (like toddler aged and younger) I was completely lactose intolerant. Somehow, it went away for about 10 years, then came back. So not cool...

    :roflmao:

Anyway, I think I'm lactose tolerant and I absolutely hate it. Everytime I eat something with any type of dairy in it, which is basically everything, my stomach starts to hurt. The sad thing is that I LOVE cheese, yogart, and ice cream. I've tried Silk soy milk and it was DISGUSTING. I really hope I'm not.

Wow...I bet your parents are glad they are paying for you to experience new people and cultures right now. You are what make exchange students so amazing.

Actually, I'm on scholarship so my parents are paying for nothing except for $350 a month.

And I really don't appriciate that negative comment. I meet plenty of people and I experience plenty of the culture.

It just so happens that the first conversation I heard was: Who was the last German pope?
So not only was their German complicated and fast... it was also religious. And I have absolutely no desire to learn about religion. In English or German.

You're right. The negative comment wasn't needed and for that I apologize. However I know/knew several exchange students who behaved similarly. While I was an exchange student even if something was not part of my beliefs or I thought was superfluous I would participate.

And the comment was directed at was skipping the baptism. Not the ducking out of the dinner as those can be awful and boring. I understand the being uncomfortable and removing yourself from that situation. I applaud you for that. But the unwillingness to at least witness something which is an important part of the culture of which you are currently living is what ticked me off.

I apologize for being so quick to comment so rudely.
