Quick question - Empty Closets - A safe online community for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered people coming out

I have an assignment to ask a bunch of people the same question and I was wondering if you could answer it. I'm trying to get a variety of responses from different ages and different backgrounds. Don't think about it too much, just reply back with the first thing or things that come to your mind.

The question is, What is consciousness?

soul, thoughts, knowledge of right vs. wrong, spirit, understanding

sorry there's a few there. I actually think it's the "Me" part of me - it may physically exist in and around my brain/body etc, but it connects my body to my Spirit/soul/whatever. Allows me to physically perceive stuff instead of seeing it from a floating point somewhere in the theoretical ether.

Sorry if that was too complicated, but you said the first thing that came to mind hehe

It's being awake and being fully aware of everything around you. Not just physical things either, like spiritual, emotional, mental things. It's being around everything and knowing you're around everything.

It's being able to think in well... thoughts, words, emotions, and pictures. It's also being aware of your thought process. It's the ability to separate what you want to do from what you choose to do. It's the ability to choose.

That's a hard question :/ It's hard to explain.

The ability to differenciate between right or wrong according to your own beliefs. The knowledge that they are /your/ beliefs. Awareness.

It doesn't matter. I think there is more than one way of answering the question and isnessofwhatis needed to ask several people to see what the range of answers and the most common ones were. So your different answer is still useful for her assignment.

first thing that popped into my head was 'sense of self' as in, the belief that you know what you are and what you are surrounded by.
