OMG, so I finally did it, am just now winding down the weekend at one. This was my first one, and what an amazing time. I haven't had this much fun in ages. It felt like some crazy, 3 night, non-stop slumber-party of silliness and lots of hugs, among other activities. Even my mate really loved it, who isn't himself a furry, but has me to put up with

It was also very LGBT friendly, saw lots of rainbow/pride kindsa things about.

I'll have to post more details later, but if you've ever been tempted to go, by all means, go!

Now I really wanna get a fur-suit...I have a rubber-puppy suit, but that's a bit kinky to just wear about, and I'd be a tad shy to push the limits...though I did see one rubber-pup, as well as an inflatable fox.

OK, time to go to the board-gaming room, and then eat...I hate having to return to real life tomorrow.

Not something I'm actively pushing for, but if invited or it was nearby, sure. I enjoy spectating events like this.

Not sure about a costume... no idea what my fursona would be.

Sorry to admit my ignorance but the only thing I know about furries is from an episode of Bored to Death, when Jason Schwartzman's character was spying on a couple having sex in bear suits lol. Is that really what they do? I don't understand that fetish just like I don't understand a lot of fetishes, but if it makes you happy then it's a good thing!

Nah, that's just an exaggeration, the fandom is huge, and there are maybe like 10 people who do that. Most of us just make characters and draw them, or make costumes. Just creative shiz in general, but that wont get a cover story in any media really. They like to look for stuff they can get a reaction out of.

And oh my gosh, Im like, super jealous! I wanna go asap!
I mean, I should wait till im done making mine, but hey! Would still be fun!
Can still annoy my favorite artists without it!

I'm not a furry but My Cat is, I'd go to a convention with her if she wanted to. Alas it's unlikely due to the innate hatred of all life in her DNA

Considering the huge amount of furry porn floating on the web I'd say it's a much higher number than 10. That said, there is a negative stigma around furries that I don't agree with. I'd imagine most furries are open minded and creative individuals and it isn't like they're hurting anyone by dressing up or yiffing for that matter.

No. In person, they're just gamer nerds. You can go attend a local fur-meet if you want to, of which there are plenty, but the last one that I visited had someone delivering a half-hour lecture on Atari consoles, the company's history, and a discussion on the reasons behind Atari's decline and fall. It's not that they can't also be fun, but if you're going there expecting some wild kink-fest or something, you're going to be disappointed. They keep all of that stuff in fantasy, where it belongs, which is really a large part of the reason that rates of STIs in the fandom are really surprisingly low.

That said, meets and conventions are really the best way to get acquainted with furries and what the culture is really all about. They're a very nice, artsy community. They tend, in my experience, to be very humble about themselves. You seldom encounter anyone at a meet who isn't LGBT friendly.

Myself, I don't go to cons, preferring smaller meets and stuff. I'm not really one for crowds.

I can see you as a mongoose, or a honey badger. Now get working on that fursuit, so it's ready for next year!

@Sartorius...I also hope you can make fur con soon!

You'll be able to shop for custom collars, and such

    ~

This was my first con, as opposed to smaller meets, and I liked it a lot more because of all the fur-suiting activities, and getting to see them do the various contests, talent shows, and just to get hugs! Smaller meets may be cozier, but I didn't have nearly as much fun, as they seemed to be more about video games and electronics, and I am kinda an odd furry in that I have about zero interest in video games/tech stuff/computers...so a con like this offers much more variety.

I had a fun time in the vendors area, and artists row, where you could get everything from cute to kinky, to both cute, and kinky. Oh, and the furry comics booth was nice, too! I've always loved comic books, and never had any furry-based ones before.

I also agree that people tend to see furries in an overly sexual manner, though I do like that aspect of it. I know a good number of furs into this part of the fandom, and they're all very warm, sensible people.

It's also amazing the number of things one can do safely, and how much the imagination can carry one along. I think one thing about furs and sexuality, is the way they tap into the aspect of animals not having all the taboos, guilt and hang-ups about sex as humans do; it melds the instinctual sense of seeking the pleasurable with limitless creativity. That said, I'm all for the 'adult' aspects of the fandom, and not a bit ashamed of it. I'm perhaps even odder as a fur in that I'm what is called a rubber-fur, or a furry who likes latex animal outfits, more so than furry ones...so far I have just been a puppy, but by the next con, I hope to have an inflatable latex skunk suit.

Which probably seems even stranger, But hey! It cleans up easy.

I can't imagine those dry-cleaning bills that you could rack up with the furry sort...though I would like one just to do other g-rated things in, like go bowling, and just goof around in.

    ~

But there's so much more to the fandom; a general love of nature/animals, writing, art, role-playing...and in an odd way, it was after I discovered the fandom that despite how I felt I had managed to overcome so much of the guilt that America builds up around the sexual, that this was in fact an ongoing process, and one that being able to pretend to be whatever you want, doing whatever you want certainly affords a potentially transcendent experience.

As an aside: Much of the 'yiffy' or sexual things are private, so the sexual aspects don't jump at you, but one can certainly sniff them out.

You'll a see LOT more overtly sexual things on display at a LGBT pride event, 10 times over...

Oh, lately, I've played mostly as a goofy black lab, myself.

I used to spend a lot more time at the "yiffing" venues, but I ended up with a non-furry boyfriend who, not being open to even that, put a moratorium on any sexual RP, even after I tried to get him to understand we were really just writing porn at each other. My whole social circle, right now, are people who are completely not interested in that kind of stuff, more or less for similar reasons.

I agree on things being a lot more primal, with furs. It is actually perfectly conceivable, in the furry community, for a straight guy and a gay guy to be snuggled up for hours, and there is no shame or awkwardness about it. They have that sort of fraternal sense of trust toward each other, so they can't even conceive of either of them doing anything predatory. The gay guy can't imagine his straight friend taking a touch the wrong way and beating him up or something, and the straight guy knows that the gay guy isn't going to force anything. It's very natural, the way it's all done. What the fur does, I think, is remove unnatural social pretensions.

I would definitely do as our friend, the OP, did, which is to go to a few fur-meets before heading for a convention. I have heard some stories of people going to cons and being sort of depressed because they didn't really know anybody there. It's best to have a few people that you already know face-to-face, so you will be fairly sure of having someone to talk to or to show you around.

Eh, fursuit sex is not common, because it gets way too hot in those things, but I do think some attraction to anthro characters is common in most of the fandom.

    Anyway...

I've only actually been to one convention, but I've been to a lot of local meetups and I'm pretty well involved in the furry community. I don't have a suit, just tail/ears/paws, but it's a 6-foot lemur tail so it's still pretty conspicuous and a ton of fun to wear in public, on the few occasions when I can.

I usually hit up Animazement in Raleigh each year, which is anime-based but still an okay spot to furry it up.

...It was just as everyone was about to sit at the furry con, in their fancy furry suits, when George, who had never before been to one of these events, just had to let one out...those chili dogs with the kidney beans did a number on his digestive tract, but he felt safe in his big furry outfit, no one would ever hear it...so he did it, a little loud reverberating inside his costume, but he was sure no one heard it...but just as soon as he was relieved, he noticed to his horror, through the tiny eyeholes of his suit, that the furry heads of dogs with floppy ears, burly bear's heads, puppy heads with dangling tongues...all were slowly turning to look at him...

Not really into the furry scene, but I have a few friends who are... I've never been to a furry con but if a friend wanted me to go with them I totally would, cons are always fun~!

A con I regularly staff has gotten a bit of a furry population over the past few years, people in fursuits have started popping up in groups and I gotta say, some of them have some impressive costumes and I admire their courage! Going in cosplay is fun but also kind of makes me nervous, I can only imagine how nervous I'd feel if I was in a fursuit. Furries catch a lot of hell just for being furries and going around in costume is like wearing a giant target for assholes... I can relate!

I mean like, doin it with suits. Not even half of us have suits. Not even a quarter of us with suits do it in them, either because we don't want to, it's a health hazard, or we don't want to ruin the custom-made/hard to clean costumes we either worked hard to make, or paid a lot to obtain. Though, the media finds it absolutely hilarious, and apparently fun to talk about.

NSFW of actual anthro characters, however, is an entirely different story. That's much, much more common. Like, I see that sort of thing when im just browsing art, not even trying.
