I'll admit, I wasn't always the type to recognize gratuity I hardly ever left a tip for a waiter or bartender. It's pretty selfish I know, although I've gotten better about it through the years leaving at least two or three dollars, sometimes five. I say this because after working as a bell hop at a casino hotel I now understand from the host stand point what it feels like being 'stiffed' (no tip) It sucks really, especially from the smallest effort, the effort period goes a long way. I would have assumed after loading and unloading certain guest's luggage a measly dollar would suffice but no just a simple 'thank you'. It's an eye opening lesson for me, I tip for any help I get anywhere now whether I'm at a restaurant, bar, or hotel. I'm so much more observant with how people in customer service work now... because customer service is a stressful job and even though a tip is complimentary, still, recognizing the little things an employee does for you can make their day.

I live in America where waiters don't get paid even minimum wage (in many restaurants). If wait service is provided, I'll tip 15-20% of the bill.

I tip even though i'm fundamentally against the idea. You're getting paid already to do your job. Why should I pay you to do something you're already getting paid to do. I only tip because restaurants pay them so little. Restaurant should just pay their employees well and have tips be used for service that's over the top.

I'm already paying you for my food. That money covers your business expenses so why shouldn't it cover decent wages. Just include the "tip" into the price of the food. I feel nickle'd and dimed when I tip and hate the pressure being put on you.

I always tip, unless they give crap service or they charge for service on the bill.

I always tip, they never make enough money. Usually I tip a little over 20%. They need it more than me.

Absolutely. The only time I wouldn't tip is if the waiter or whoever was exceptionally rude, but I can't think of a time when that's happened.

No, because we don't do this in Australia.

Always. More if they are nice and helpful, less if they aren't.

No, and I don't know anyone who does. It is not customary to tip anyone here as all wait staff are required by law to earn minimum wage, and employers can't use tips to top up employee wages. The closest I come is letting takeaway delivery drivers keep change (I usually pay by card though).

When I worked at a pub, we did get tips occasionally though.

Yes, 15-20%, because it's the correct thing to do when I have means in a country as economically misaligned as mine.

Well, it's actually fun to tip. I always tip 20%, especially if I'm having a good time.

If the waiter does something that takes the pleasure out of the experience, then that might hurt the tip. If the glamour is not there and I'm feeling sort of uncertain, I suddenly start thinking about what I actually have in my account and how it feels to not have money when I need it.

And that's not me trying to punish the waiter or anything. It's just that, when that bubble of self-confidence isn't there, I just feel like I have less to give. If you do something that makes the place you are working at feel cheap, then you make me feel poor. Not only does that make me less inclined to shell out money, but it makes me feel less like I can afford to keep going out to eat.

So yeah, I always try to tip, and often, I ask in places where I'm not sure, "Do you accept gratuities?" It's just part of the fun of going out to do things just for pleasure.

    I can.

One time there was this meth head who completely fucked up everyone's order.

Then this other time this annoying lady took nearly an hour to serve us because she was goofing around laughing.

Then this one lady i asked her to refill my drink which was close to empty but she said it wasn't empty enough so after she walked away I purposely spilled it and then asked for a refill.

Then this one guy who didn't even know what the hell he was doing and taking forever for everything then another waitor comes with our food and he says this and then the guy finally comes back and is pointing it to him like right after he had given us the food.

Then one time this lady just looked annoyed at us the whole time and acted like she was annoyed.

always, unless the service was bad enough that I didn't feel the need to, which has only happened once that I recall.

I went to Red Robin (gourmet burgers, for those that aren't familiar with the place) with a friend for dinner. we were seated right away and gave our drink order. our server brought out our drinks and didn't give me a straw for mine, which was helpful considering I'd ordered one of their alcohol mikshakes. he took our food order and never came back again till he finally gave us our check. I sat with that shake in front of me for 10 minutes and didn't get a straw till I flagged down another employee and asked for one. that 10 minutes my friend and I sat and watched our server as he went to all his other tables and fawned over each one, never glancing in our direction once. that was when we figured out what was going on. when he had taken our food order he apparently looked us over and had decided we weren't worth much of a tip, which he was greatly mistaken about. after we finished our meal we purposely left him only pennies for a tip, asked at the cashier if there was a comment card we could fill out, did so naming him and pointed out how everyone else had done a fine job and we would be back but would never eat in his section again.
