I'm more of a positive person, so here is a counter-thread. What's the biggest advantage of being your particular flavor of LGBT?

Personally, I'm very grateful for the open-minded, passionate people it's allowed me to meet, and for all the thinking and growing up that being aware of the struggles of the LGBT community made me do.
Plus, being bi, I think being attracted to all genders is seriously cool, and means I technically have more options.

So, what about you? What do you enjoy about being LGBT?

Me and my boyfriend are essentially the same size for clothes and shoes. So we have both, in essence, doubled our wardrobe

I was thinking of starting a thread like this myself. It is better to stress the advantages, I think.

So the biggest advantages of being gay?

Well, first (assuming you are a gay man) you get to have sex with other men, which is pretty fun.:icon_wink

As a more serious point (maybe), there seems to be a certain latitude given to gay men, at least. You can get away with things a straight person could never get away with, be outrageous, lard your conversations with innuendo, and so on.

I was just about to say, I was lied to growing up in church. Abstinence isn't the only 100% effective method of birth control, being gay is!

I think the experience of being closeted and coming through it made me a stronger, more empathetic person and in my experience this is often the case for gay people. I think the main advantage is being able to be surrounded by that kind of person. The sense of community that being gay has brought me is an immense blessing in my life. There's something really amazing about feeling like wherever I go I can find "my people."

Having to accept myself and my sexuality and gender identity, I feel like it has made me a much more empathetic person, and I am a lot more willing to accept people for who they are. I honestly don't know how accepting of other people I'd be if I weren't gay (I'd definitely still be supportive of LGBTQ rights), living in a very homogenous, rural, conservative area, I'm not sure how accepting I would be of people who were a different ethnicity, religion, gender, etc. than me. I feel that accepting myself made me accept others as well that my society around me tells to not accept.

I'm not sure if this has to do with me being bi, but with the fallout of coming out to my parents (got disowned) I tend to be less judgmental of other people. I can see people for who they are without prejudice filtering what I see. I promised myself that I would not judge people like my dad does. I try really hard to love people for who they are not what they are or what they were.

The biggest advantage to being gay the level of intimacy you can share with a partner, not just sexually.

I think being LGBT has made me more sensitive to disadvantaged and oppressed people. I'm not saying I would've been a homophobic jerk if I had straight, but I would've been a member of all the "privileged" groups and I don't know if I would've paid much attention to the struggles of marginalized people.

It has enabled me to meet some cool people. (There is also the opposite of this as a disadvantage).

getting to love who I really love and being able to clear a massive hurdle in my life which was impeding my own happiness and sense of self-worth.

Well, it's gotten me back into church, oddly enough. The sense of community is really good for my mental health.

As others have stated, no pregnancy. No having to feel forced into gender roles and dealing with sexist macho crap that some straight guys are socialized to feel.
