I've been into music for my whole life. I've always enjoyed writing the music itself. I've just never been able to write lyrics. Mainly because all songs seem to about love. I haven't been in any relationships or had any deep feelings for anyone. I've been super frustrated about being in the closet, having HOCD/sexual confusion and not being able to be in any relationships. I recently started writing a song about being closeted, having HOCD and missing out on love. I'm pretty happy with the song so far.
And that is where the art comes from-- true expression. Pretty much everybody knows love is a strong emotion and it works well in song, but sometimes the best songs are not about love. Most of my favorites aren't. Jimmy Buffett is great at this. His most famous song "Margaritaville" is pretty much just about living it up in the tropics. Although he also has one called "He Went to Paris", which details the life of a man who started out energetic and impetuous only to find out that absolutely nothing over many years went according to plan, and he's made his peace with that. He also has a very famous song where he fantasizes about eating an awesome cheeseburger while on a diet. I don't mean to say he's the greatest musician out there, but his songwriting chops in particular are substantial.
Good job~ I'm into music as well and love to write songs, though they're over dramatized. The one I'm currently writing is titled "Charcoal on my fingertips" or "canvas of perfection (deception) About a depressed, once happy artist clinging on to memories and fantasies. Her reason for living is charcoal painting her broken dreams on the Canvas of Deception/Despair/Perfection (changing at every chorus) Art's beautiful. Like argentwing said, it comes from true expression. If you finish writing it and feel comfortable posting, it'd be awesome to see
