Books!

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by Drizzt DoUrden, Dec 11, 2008.

  1. So... My mom asked me to make a Christmas wish list for her to choose from, and to distribute to the family so people know what to get me. I, being an avid reader, have about 90% of the list so far filled with books. But I need more! MOAR!!!! *ahem*

My question is... What are some of your favorite books, books you would suggest, etc.? Also, any good LGBT fiction books would be appreciated.

    My list so far is:

    Identical by Ellen Hopkins
    Untamed by the Casts
Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
Book of a Thousand Days and River Secrets by Shannon Hale
The Sellsword Trilogy by RA Salvatore
Interview With a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, and Vittorio by Anne Rice
The Good Neighbors by Holly Black

I like all genres, but nonfiction isn't particularly a favorite. As a sidenote, has anyone ever read Kim Harrison's books, the Rachel Morgan/Dead Witch Walking series?

    *Goes to bookshelf*
Someone Like You by Beck (he has a couple others too.)
    The Straight Road to Kylie
Boy Meets Boy (ok, not the best)

Go to BarnesandNoble.com or amazon.com and look through the gay fiction, I have a wishlist on B&N.com of about 10 books XD

Straight Road to Kylie is AMAZING!
I also loved the Rainbow Boys trilogy.
I also enjoy Nancy Farmer's books. Something about them makes them hard for me to put down.

Luna is by Julie Anne Peters. She also wrote Keeping You A Seceret, Define Normal, and, if I remember correctly, Far From Xanadu. Keeping You A Secret is my favourite book of all time; it's a must read.

Alex Sanchez has amazing books. He wrote the Rainbow Boys trilogy, which I highly recommend. God Box is about being religious and gay which I haven't read but have heard amazing things about.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult is amazing. It's about a girl born for her sister's medical needs. It's a crier.

I'm reading several right now including The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and One Child by Torey Hayden. The Lovely Bones is written from the perspective of a young girl who was raped and killed by a family friend. Angel's Ashes is a memoir of a very poor Irish family written by one of the sons. One Child is the true story of one of Torey Hayden's students who was abondoned by her mother on the side of the road and then abused and neglected by her father; Hayden's other books are all about her extra-ordinary students.

Carol B. Cooney is phenominal. She writes mainly YA "thrillers" (I think it's more along the lines of morbid mind games by evil characters). I would recommend the Losing Christina trilogy and Freeze Tag. Her books can go for 1¢ on Amazon.

If you want a play, try to find Shadowlands. It's a play about C.S. Lewis, of Narnia fame, and his possible love. I am warning you, when we did this at my last church, everyone cried.

When it comes to classics, you cannot go wrong with Charles Dickens. Whether you're a fan of the para-page or not, his work is amazing. Possibly boring, but amazing.

    I'll have more later.

Dear God, I did this all without looking at a book... Nerd much?

I have to reccomend Michael Crichton's Prey and State of Fear if you like sciency stuff.. I brought this up cause my chemistry teacher was talking about nano tech and she mentioned the book Prey.

Oh and I was reading Wicked the book over the summer. Pretty good but I wasn't expecting anything sexual and got lots of it!

Plus there's this book titled Flower for Algernon by who I forgot, but it's a nice, moving short story... probably about 300-350 page long? But a really nice book!

O, yea. Wicked. Deffinatly a shock when I got to the sex, so I am warning you.

Flowers for Algernon is amazing. It's about a man who has what is basically smart surgery. The operation was also done on the mouse. Another crier.

O! Animal Farm by George Orwell! Amazing. Just, amzing.

And for poetry: Dickinson, Shakespeare, Poe and Ginsberg. Fail-less.

    Yup.

But you HAVE to finish the Losing Christina trilogy. If you can't get the last one, I will send you my copy.

    BY THE WAY!
Love the little gay twist on Interview with the Vampire although I bet the vampire himself won't want to be labelled cause they kept on insisting that love is love and nothing else. AWW I want a vampire bf! LOL

Leave Myself Behind by Bart Yates was awesome. Anything by Christopher Rice is good, especially if you like a murder/mystery book. All seven Chronicals of Narnia, any of the Inheritance Cycle by Paolini. I have many more if you want some, but those are the one I though were the best.

WHEN YOU ARE ENGULFED IN FLAMES by DAVID SEDARIS! Best book ever!

Actually, if you're unfamiliar with David Sedaris, you should start off with "Me Talk Pretty One Day", which is considered his best book out of them all so far. He also happens to be gay, and it comes up occasionally in his hilarious essays.

  12. Thanks for all the suggestions so far! And no, Amy, that doesn't make you a nerd; it makes you a good reader. Good readers= awesome.

I'm definitely getting Wicked, thanks for reminding me.

No Rachel Morgan readers though... that's disappointing. She is, in my opinion, the most kickass character ever created.

Read both of those. I loved the Chronicles of Narnia, they're a classic. The Inheritance Cycle was not that great. When I read the last book, it read too fast for the size of book it was, and all I could think of was how overrated Christopher Paolini is.

Yeah, for some reason I haven't got around to reading the third one, I don't know, after it took 2 years for the third one to come out i wasn't really excited, and I'm almost done with "The Gospel According to Biff: Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore. F:***:ing hilarious.

  14. Well, I didn't know this until I finished Brisingr, but apparently it's not the end. The story isn't finished, just the cycle. How does that work?

I knew before Brisingr came out that it wasn't the last one, but it will probably be another 2 years for the last one comes out.

Summer of My German Soldier, Night, Antigone, and The Monkey's Paw.

I keep thinking of more.

I like being a nerd though...

Good readers = God's gift to humanity

Well... I am a complete forensics freak so I love forensic mysteries so if you like that sort of things too then any things by Patrica Cornwell or Kathy Reichs is a must read!

I am also in love with The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons (I'm getting Angels and Demons for Christmas)

The Wind on Fire Trilogy by William Nicholson is really good too, it's fantasy BooK 1: The Wingsinger
Book 2: Slaves of the Mastery
    Book 3: Firesong
It's complicated to explain because it's kind of a weird plot so read this and it sounds really wacky I know but they are really really good books.
If you are looking for a true story then I like 'A Boy Called It" by David Pelzer. It's about a boy growing up with an extremely abusive alcoholic mother and is really sad but such an amazing story. It is followed by 'The Lost Boy' and "A Man Named Dave' which tell of his life in and out of foster homes as he grows into a young man.
