Which countries do you think will be next to legalize same sex marriage?

After the victory in the US, I was pondering where else we might see additional victories.

In Europe, I think these countries are very much lagging behind, and overdue to change their laws, and are places I can see matters changing:

    1. Germany
    2. Austria
    3. Switzerland (How about being neutral, huh? And allowing all marriages! ))
    4. Italy (Yes, I know...the Catholics! But it still isn't exactly the backwaters of Europe, and the new Pope seems to have been less divisive
    5. Greece??? Maybe it would help the financial crisis, and spur a wedding boom.

In South America, I think Columbia & Chile will soon; I wonder about Venezuela and Bolivia, and why support isn't higher; I'm curious as to the factors behind this....

In Asia, it's very hard to say; I'm pretty much stumped.

And as for Africa and the Middle East, magic eight ball says chances not so good.

Australia would be nice to see change; seems like the last of the big Western Countries/colonies to do so...

These are places it doesn't seem impossible to me; there may also be countries in Central America I've overlooked, though Costa Rica seems like the best bet.

So, who is over-due, and who's next???

Austria just voted against SSM. Civil unions might come soon to Greece, but marriage is a long way to go. (If they negotiate more with Russia, I might just temporarily take it off the list) Germany would seem like the most likely, despite not having complete support from the government.

Asia is a really tough call. Gay rights isn't really a priority over there. The issue isn't really discussed very often. Though... Nepal's Supreme Court made some pro-gay marriage ruling back in 2008, but that pretty much got lost in time because the country never really took the next steps to legalize it.

Australia seems to be the most likely to legalize it next.

I gotta say Germany. They're way overdue. Germany is the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement, dating back to the nineteenth century, shortly before Germany was unified. While the German gay rights movement was destroyed by the Nazis, they eventually got back on their feet.

They do have "registered partnerships" that offer a lot of the benefits of marriage, but it's still not a substitute for real marriage.

I think (or at least hope) they'll legalize same-sex marriage sometime soon. It'll give me an excuse to come out to my aunt who lives there.

Mexico. While articles say that it's already legal, it's not technically as sweeping as in most other countries and people still jump through hoops.

Italy and Germany may also be next (in a few years, maybe).

Huh, well after the big US victory, people don't seem to optimistic about the rest of the globe.

I think in Europe, one of the problems is the rise of far-right anti-immigrant groups, who also tend to have various other xenophobic views, which can't be helping.

I think Australia is likely to legalize marriage.

Yes, I purposely left out the same-sex part because people should start seeing marriage as it is. ^w^

I'd very much like to see Cuba legalise gay marriage next. Cuba's always been that strange country that seems to get some of things right in regards to its socialist doctrine; extremely high rates of literacy and education as well as good healthcare. I think Cuba legalising gay marriage or a civil union would be a wakeup call to the developed economies of the world and those in the Western Hemisphere still blocking gay marriage as gay marriage is generally considered to be one of the cornerstones that show a developed society that respect personal and individual human rights.

In regards to homosexuality in Asia... well there are certain countries where you aren't even allowed to divorce yet like the Philippines I believe (correct me if I'm wrong). There have been small movements to help with LGBT presence in the region such as some initiatives by ASEAN (South East Asia is considered to be one of the more progressive regions in Asia).

I'd say if anything, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam would be among the first 4 to legalise a civil union or gay marriage in Asia as Japan's tradition of Bushido and homosexuality as seen with prominent historical figures like Oda Nobunaga and Takeda Shingen as well as a thriving pornographic industry in Asia signals some form tolerance for progressive ideals with it comes to gender and identity. Singapore and HK would do so because they are the most Westernised out of all the Asian economies and countries. Vietnam on the other hand is a strange basket case, we're generally, okay with gay people and we don't necessarily go balls on it, in fact, many of the catholic priests I have talked to don't even that the issue of gays on their mind. Homophobia here is soft, compared to the Westboro Baptist Church in the US. However, the Communist Party is afraid that by allowing such Civil Rights would open a doorway to which other dissidents would demand more rights. I think as the economy grows and living standards rise up to around that of modern day Malaysia, we'll see those gay rights things passing through.

Germany and Australia. I'm not very familiar with how marriage rights are around the world but I get the feeling these are two well developed countries that, as some said, are way overdue.

I'm not surprised as someone said about Austria voting against SSM. I've been there many times on ski trips and a lot of the people there are very religious, at least it was very obvious you were in catholic country because people seemed much more conservative.

Trust me, a country in which politics easily get away with the most homophobic stuff is no where near same sex marriage legalization. People are not ready for it, trust me. I hope I'm wrong though. At best, they might legalize civile unions, but just to show Europe how modern they are, not because they care about LGBT rights.

Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Croatia or Australia. I think one of these countries will be the next one.

Support for same-sex marriage is very high in Austria - as it is in Germany - but don't expect the current governments to implement SSM anytime soon, and I don't expect people there to vote with that in mind (as they wouldn't here). Unfortunately, there is nothing in places like Germany proclaiming that marriage is a right for all, and no Supreme Court to rule that a ban against SSM is illegal.

There's as many Russian politicians who support gay marriage as there are condom machines in Vatican City :roflmao:

Yes, Switzerland! For now we have civil unions but marriage would definitely be a huge step forward. Hopefully the U.S., along with all the other countries where it is legal, will serve to show that SSM is not evil/harmful/the end of civilisation/some other bullshit, it's just about equality.

I hope Switzerland, but that's a far cry. Germany will be next, though. There are way too many calls among many leaders ever since Ireland's referendum to legalise it.
