Nerds/geeks who aren't into pop culture

I keep hearing people calling themselves geeks/nerds. It seems like most of those people are into specific comic books or tv shows. What do you think of nerds/geeks who are more into other stuff? Like reading scientific studies or textbooks for fun.

Yeah, that's me. A lot of the people I know who call themselves geeks or nerds are into Harry Potter, Sherlock or The Big Bang Theory. Not that there's anything wrong with being into of those things, but who the hell isn't nowadays?

I personally like maths (as you can probably tell), classic novels (especially George Orwell), Standard English (most geeks/nerds I know either use faux Old English or simply very poor grammar), politics, physics, the list goes on. I usually see the nerd/geek subculture as being intellectual, but sadly that's not always the case.

I think the term "nerd" has morphed over the past 10 years or so from having a negative connotation to being looked at more neutrally or positively.

In theory, I think most people would consider me a nerd. I have heard the term "nerd" be applied under different circumstances to someone with any of the following attributes:
    • is into gaming
    • is into computers (software, hardware, and/or theory)
    • is "smart"
    • is detailed/technical
    • follows comic books and/or superheros
    • follows space-related media (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc)
    • is a bookworm
    • follows book to movie remakes
    • is socially awkward

Like CodeForLife said, nerd fits a whole group of people and in recent years has become more of a positive thing. I think primarily the most positive usages are for "gamers" or very intelligent people.

I think many people want to identify as a geek because they prefer to stay inside/catch up on their favorite shows etc. and they get really into them, which is kind of like "studying" the thing they are interested in, hence the whole geek thing.

But to answer your question, I love math and logic. I find people who are really into science/textbooks to be pretty interesting. I think information and learning is one of the most important things people can do, so I always commend people for pursuing it. Especially if it's something that is about how the world works - math, science, physics, etc.

A little rambly but yeah. I think the term nerd/geek has lost its original meaning and has almost become a pop culture thing anyway.

Yeah, that's the common definition of nerd in the current century.
I've called a geek several times and only because I relate to most of those attributes...

Would anyone be offended if I suggested an approach of "fuck it and like what you like?"

Nowadays, basically geek's everything that isn't on CBS or NBC. It's a little too broad, I think and honestly, it's not really an alternate culture anymore, it's mainstream. That being said, I like a lot of stuff that used to be geek culture- sci-fi, superheroes, etc.

I think I can call myself a nerd/geek  I both like watching (admiring/loving/obsessing) TV shows and movies, video games, and some trading card games. I also like reading Biology books and answering my brother's Math and Physics books. I also like making (sketching and painting) characters and giving them back stories.

I want to ask you guys about this: What is the difference of a NERD and a GEEK? Correct me if I am wrong but I have read somewhere (I forgot where) that a NERD is someone who likes academical stuffs (like doing math and chemistry experiments and shits) and a GEEK is someone who likes fictional stuffs (like watching Harry Potter and cosplaying and shits). I feel like the source where I got this is wrong, so please correct me if I am wrong

Honestly I thought these were synonyms. I didn't realize they might have different meanings o,o.

I feel that since I've started working at Teavana I've become a bit of a tea nerd. I could tell you the difference between green tea, black tea, oolong tea, and rooibos tea.

Also I've been getting kinda nerdy with Tarot recently although I don't know how long that is going to last.

I like learning, period, and I'll read just about anything fiction or non-fiction. I'm a fan of some shows and movies but have never been a "fanatic" and the only time I've ever been socially "awkward" is when I meet people who are suspicious of anybody who is educated, people who "don't get" what reading books is all about, or who can only talk about drinking, sports and "hot girls"---and in those cases I figured it was them being socially awkward and me just quietly backing away in search of someone else who could hold a conversation.

I have quite niche and several rather academic interests, but I feel there's a certain social aspect as to whom we designate nerds, and I'm not sure if I entirely fit into that.

These are such great threads; a lot more engaging than the standard fare at some of my other internet haunts.

The term "nerd" has been "softened" in recent years, from my observation. A nerd can now simply be someone who has an interest in fantasy or science fiction. But with Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars, who doesn't have some interest in it?

I consider myself a nerd for my bookish ways, my interest in esoteric topics and academia, and my penchant for reading textbooks for fun. But then again, my interest in science and math is limited, and the stereotypical nerd is typically one portrayed as having an affinity for those subjects.

I don't feel like I need to own the word "nerd", but if you're only reason for calling yourself a nerd is that you watch anime and like Harry Potter, perhaps find a different word.

I guess I am too because:
    - I am very socially awkward and actually enjoy being alone.
    - I like chemistry, physics, chemistry, maths and chemistry. Basically learning things.
    - I read scientific papers for fun.
    - I watched Breaking Bad 4 times... did I mention my love for chemistry?

I'm so geeky/nerdy that I play video games sometimes

I'm so geeky/nerdy that I use the internet a lot

I think these terms are becoming somewhat dated, at least in pop culture.

I whole-heartedly second this. And you have very good tastes in reading material.

I usually associate "geek" with the pop-culture side of things, and the term "nerd" with a more intellectual type. And according to definition, that is the difference.

The whole geek/nerd thing is unfortunately becoming a fad. I hate fads. But let's stop there, so I don't say anything offensive...

    ---------- Post added 15th Jul 2015 at 02:37 PM ----------

Most people would see the terms as synonyms. Only nerds and geeks know/care that there is a difference. The answer below:

Lastly - I am a geeky nerd. So that's where I fit in.

I think this is the first time being a comic freak has deemed me normal! Or at least in the majority

I could go on for days about the differences between the comic fandom, and the comic culture fandom, as well as how comic fans are stuck in societal limbo right now, but that can wait for another day :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
