Which spelling of the classic name "Peter" do you like better? Peter or Petre Both are pronounced the same way. Also, can you think of any other variants that would be nice?
I have always been partial to Saltpeter... The name "Peter" translates roughly to "Rocky," actually. Sooooo...here! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_(given_name) A whole list of different spellings from various cultures!!
Peter. Variations such as Pierre and Pedro are quite nice, too. Pyotr is also a lovely name, but it's very Russian and I'm more fond of the diminutive form, "Petya".
I was also going to suggest these names  However, I think the overly-English pronounciation of the Pierre (Peeyair) doesn't do the name justice.
Hmmm... I've never heard of "Pyotr" before but it sounds (and looks) really cool. Plus the fact that it's Russian is awesome, because my family actually has strong ties with Russia. My parents were missionaries there, and I lived there from the time I was 1-6 years old. But my only concern with a name like that is how Americans would handle it... I can just picture someone struggling over it, "pee-yo-terr... no, pie-ah-truh... no...?" So how would (a) the proper pronunciation sound and (b) it sound with an American accent? I suppose I could also have people say "Peter" for Pyotr, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of that tough spelling. So far I'm liking Petre, Peter, and Pyotr. I would consider other nationality variants, but it feels kind of off for me to choose, say, a French or Spanish variant when I'm not either? Like I love the names Javier, Matteo, and Pierre, but none would fit me since I'm an Anglo mix with English/Irish/Scottish ancestry.
