In the last thread I made. I asked if people would be more attracted to someone who was well presented and smelled bad, or someone who was s*****ier/dirtier looking but smelled good. Everybody picked the better smelling person.

Smell is definitely something very important. It triggers emotional reactions, triggers old memories etc...

this leads me to a new random question.

If you had to choose, I'm curious how many people would give up their sense of sight OVER their sense of smell.

I think most people would give up their sense of smell, but keep in mind:

    a) you will loose more than just your sense of smell. Your experience of taste (or rather "flavor") will be significantly affected.

b)Your other senses would become heightened when you are blind. Especially your hearing?!

I'd still pick smell. Taste is not an important sense for me either, so I'm okay with missing out.

My own choice: I'd give up smell, naturally...as much as I enjoy food.

I'd have the benefits of no longer smelling unpleasant body and/or washroom odors...and it might make me more tolerant of people and crowded public places in general.

Plus, I don't think I'd ever be ready to give up internet, and other things that rely mainly on our sense of sight.

I really wonder if anyone would choose differently, and why?

As important as taste is to me, when I am sick and lose my smell/flavour, I tend to ake healthier eating choices!! So there is THAT benefit... :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Hahaha true. I'm also near obese right now and trying to change, so losing my taste would be a benefit :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I could never give up seeing because so much of what I enjoy is seeing nature. I would miss being able to smell it, of course, but if I couldn't see it, that would be devastating.

Smell. I think any sane person would give up smell. Losing your sight is much more life changing in a bad way and you'll likely need help from others to help you live day to day. I know its all a hypothetical but I can't help thinking about these things.

There's no way in smell I'd give up my sight.

I picked smell like almost everyone here...

Smell is the easies choice here, if you really wanted to put down a hard dilemna, you should have polled : eyes or ears!

That would have made people crazy

I'm a major foodie & enjoy savoring my meals. I also love different aromas. Such as, hay, newly mowed grass, acacia trees, honeysuckle, jasmine, wisteria, cinnamon, baking bread, etc. I'd miss those things. Still, I'd give those up, so I may continue to see my husband, our kitty, sunsets, rainbows, waterfalls, a field of wildflowers & many other things that bring me pleasure.

Giving up sight would pretty much mean I can't do a lot of the things I planned to do in life. Giving up smell (and taste) wouldn't really be that bad. Hell, I could eat all the healthy food I want and never have cravings for junk food.

Smell? The vast majority of information we gather about the world is through our eyes. Blindness is by far the worst sensory disability. I'd literally rather lose a limb and maybe more before my vision.

Food isn't just taste, it's also about the texture. And as much as I love food, I think I could learn to live without a sense of taste.
Vision on the other hand is far too important for me to let go of.

I can see what you are saying, but it would have to be smell. Sight and hearing are just so much more important in most situations, losing my sight would leave me in constant fear, and as a musician losing my hearing would rob me of one of my biggest loves.... Thus sight vs hearing that is a much more difficult question.

    ---------- Post added 30th Jul 2015 at 02:06 AM ----------

I can see what you are saying but for me it would have to be smell, indeed as a smoker, ex, for many years I basically did sacrifice that sense without any noticeable effect on my life

Sight vs hearing g that is a much more difficult question... And I think I'd have to go for keeping my sight even then. Much though it would hurt me deeply, music is a huge thing in my life, losing my sight completely would destroy me, I would be in constant terror

Bloody software lol. Why did that happen

I would much rather give up my sense of smell and taste than sight.
