In this short public speaking class I took, the teacher encouraged us to talk with our hands to engage the audience. I am not able to talk with my hands without it looking awkward and unnatural. My mother, who talks with her hands all the time, says that it is a Jewish thing. I guess I'm not Jewish enough.:icon_sad: I forget where, but I read somewhere that feminine people tend to talk with their hands more. What do you guys think makes some people talk with their hands and some people not? Is it a gene? Is it a part of personality?

I talk with my hands when I'm nervous  Not sure the technical reason.

I learned that it actually depends on my mood! I picked 'yes' but I don't do so all the time.

I do. And I actually know ASL (American Sign Language), so I literally do talk with my hands.

I wouldn't be able to talk without using my hands.

I wish there was a middle option. I chose "Yes".

I definitely don't flail my hands around when I talk and I don't just randomly talk with my hands. If I'm trying to explain something or talk about something I'm passionate about, I'll elaborate with my hands or move my hands in a way that demonstrates how I perceive the topic. Yes, I draw things in the air occasionally.

I actually do especially when giving a speech to people. I don't go all cray cray though. I do it when emphasising a point in the discussion. I don't think it's anything to do with genes though, I think some people naturally do it and I am one of them.

Um, yes. I'm kind of shy, so I move my hands to demonstrate my point, because I'm always scared people won't understand me with only words because I think differently from other people

When I read the name of the thread, I thought you meant treating your hands like imaginary friends and having conversations with them. I was worried for your mental stability.

But no, I don't talk with my hands at all. Being mildly autistic probably has a lot to do with it.

My hands are surprisingly good conversationalists! Seriously though, I used to do this thing when I was a kid where I'd talk to my hands and have them talk back, one of the many times where I essentially had imaginary friends.... They were talking dinosaurs in my mind! xD

Only when I'm arguing with someone, very passionate about something, or giving a speech at school.

I do if I'm nervous or excited, or if I can't find the word I need (happens often). But only in actual conversations. In general, I don't really use my hands. During public speaking, I find it difficult to use my hands without coming off as artificial or feeling awkward.

I enjoy the challenge of making a speech to a group, though. I've always been very shy, so it's like a little personal win each time. The day I successfully use my hands will be one more of those wins, I suppose!

My debating/speech-making is usually with my hands, but I tend not to use them too much while talking.

I also use my hands while teaching the students I tutor; I find it engages them to see something visual.
