I've got like 3k comment karma with very few downvotes, so I don't feel hated. It can be a pretty tough site though; there's no telling what will get huge upvotes or turn you into a pariah XD. Just browse the /r/new page and give compliments for a better total.
I posted a picture of how I show my bra strap and the score is -3. It was totally relevant to the conversation. I guess they didn't like the bright colors.
