why does it bother people?

using the word 'gay' as an insult or another word for stupid seems to offend so many of you when it shouldnt. the sentence:

oh that so gay

isnt directed at you personally its just a word in theire eyes. how can this offend anyone? calling a gay person gay isnt offensive...calling a straight person gay is only offensive if the straight person in homophobic.

most of the people that get offended by the word gay grew up with people telling them that it is a bad word

if my friends use it just joking around with me i dont really care.
but after a point it gets annoying.

also..in all of the english lang. gay is the best you can come up with when something is stupid? it just seems a little childish to me.

but even i slip up here and there from hearing it so much.

Imagine if we said 'jew' or 'nigger' instead of gay..

It's using a word that I use to describe a harmless part of myself, and someone is using it to say something is stupid or lame. It's basically equating gay with stupid.

It's like saying "Oh man, my teacher gave me a tonne of homework! That's so CHRISTIAN!"

Exactly. Why should the word gay be any more acceptable than the word nigger? Just because lots of people think it's acceptable because of modern usage does not make it so.
I did write an argument against the use of the word "gay" and took this further to using other words in my blog if anyone cares to read.

It does bother me that gay has come to be an insult. :/ That's just me. I don't expect everyone to feel the same way though. that would be silly of me to do so.
I'm part of this minority and I don't want to see it become a common insult. Because you can't deny the root of the insult "gay" comes from the usage of it to mean homosexuality and was spurred on by people who saw homosexuality as wrong. I don't want to endorse that.

the reason people get offened is because they know that you are trying toffened them.
if we where to choose the word bean and start calling it to every one we dislike they will notice its been used as a way to isult them and will get offened too

Because the word "gay" is being used as a synonym for stupid, undesirable, or worthless. Whether they're consciously thinking it or not, it plants a seed in their head that then casts all things related to the word "gay" as undesirable or worthless. I don't care if it's directed at me or not, it's rude and inaccurate.

Not sure about your choice of words there. I don't think anyone will get offended at "Jew" - it just means a descendant of the tribe of Judah or a member of the Judaic faith. The word "nigger" has, by contrast, been completely removed from its Spanish origin (negro = black) and used in the slave trade as an insult. Many people are offended by that term, to the point that a US senator recently had to apologize for using the word "niggardly" - which is totally unrelated, but you don't need to be able to speak English to be elected to the US Senate.

You might be surprised :/ at my old school the word "Jew" was used as an insult quite often. An announcement had to be made to the whole school to tell everyone to stop using the word as an insult after some complaints.

there are people at my school who say things like 'dont be so jewish' to mean dont be so stupid..its really bad imo,at least none of my friends say it

Funny thing is i know people who do replace stupid with those words and that upsets me even more because its more blatantly hating, cause some people who use gay are just ignorant and some people say it and then immediately feel bad/take it back.
