I have a piece of MATHS homework due in tomorrow and I really can't work it out. Can someone please help?

I have to explain/ show why:

    2 root 5 + 3 root 20 = 60

    1/2 root 20 = root 5

    Root 7 + root 7 = 28

    Root 12 - 2 root 3 = 0

    Root 6 1/4 = 2 and a half

    Root 11 and 1/9 = 3 and 1/3

    1/2 root 324 = 9

    5 root 2 times root 18 = 30

    Root 48 divided by root 3 = 4

If anyone can please help with any of these, I would be TREMENDOUSLY greatful, I have already tried everything to figure out why these are the answers but I JUST DONT GET IT. My teacher will kill me if I don't get these done :frowning2:

Woooaaaahhh this is weird. What the heck does 'root' mean? Is it supposed to be a variable or is it an operation? I would love to help but I need to understand more of what's going on.

I remember doing this last year. I'll try to help soon. just need to do some resEarch.

Red beauty, I'm pretty sure it's:
2 root 5 is 2 times the square root of five. I think. I need to look something's up.

Mm I've never done this before, I'm doing Algebra and other things right now. I'll also try and learn this and see if I can do the problems.

    1) Makes no sense to me
    2) root 20 = root 4 x root 5 = 2 root 5
    1/2 of 2 root 5 is obviously root 5
There for 1/2 of root 20 is root 5
    3) root 7 + root 7 = 2root 7 = root 4 x root 7 = root 28 (it's root 28 not 28)
    4) 2 root 3 = root 4 x root 3 = root 12
    substitute that in:
    root 12 - root 12 = 0
    5) Don't know about these fractional ones
    6) ditto
    7) root 324 = root 4 x root 81 = 2 root 81 = 2 x 9 = 18
    There fore 1/2 root 324 = 1/2 of 18 = 9
    8) root 18 = root 9 x root 2 = 3 root 2
    Substitute that in:
    5 root 2 x 3 root 2 = 15 root 4 = 15x 2 = 30
    9) root 48 = root 16 x root 3 = 4 root 3
    substitute that in:
    4 root 3 divided by root 3 = 4

I hope that helped. Yeah, surds are a bit of a pain. I would like to tell you how they work but it's pretty hard to explain maths in typed form. Here are some videos that should help:
Hegarty maths videos about surds (just don't watch the a level ones): https://www.youtube.com/user/HEGARTYMATHS/search?query=surds

"root" I presume means the sign that looks like /-- with a number beneath it. It's called a "radical" and means square root unless it has a 3 or higher at the top left; then it means 3rd root, etc. You can deal with them as you can with any other number, including using coefficients to multiply or divide with them.

I am far too removed from algebra to remember how to deal with them :S but do a google search for "radical equations" and you should be able to refresh your memory.

3 times square root of 20 equals 6 times square root of 5
2 times square root of 5 plus 6 times square root of 5 equals 8 times square root of 5
    8 times square root of 5 doesn't equate 60!
Or maybe I'm reading the problem wrong, but it's hard to do math without all the symbols.

    ---------- Post added 20th Sep 2015 at 08:06 PM ----------

Root 20 equals square root 4 times square root 5
    Square root 4 is 2
Thus we have 0.5*2*square root 5 = square root 5
    Yeah I need distraction

    ---------- Post added 20th Sep 2015 at 08:10 PM ----------

    Root 7 + root 7 will be 2 root 7
    2 is square root 4
Therefore we have square root 4 times square root 7, result in square root 28

Sorry, tried, but can't help you there. My school uses algebra and without it I'm completely lost.

Ps do you mean square root and cube root?
