Do you do trial & error when you're looking for potential mates?

I was wondering if anyone here does that.

I know it can be scary for anyone to just throw themselves at someone and start flirting with them, but for LGBT people, I'm sure it's way scarier because not only are you dealing with rejection, but you could potentially be even attacked or outed (in a bad way).

So do you ever do trial and error? And by that I mean, out in the open (LGBT bars, dating/hookup apps don't count). I'm talking in the general public where you can't tell if the other person you set your sight on is LGBT or not.

I personally don't. The only place and time I approach another gay dude to flirt or get their attention is either at a gay club, a cafe or restaurant in the gay district only, an LGBT group meeting or online on a dating or hookup app/site.
