Now personally, I don't like this new term that seems to be popping up everywhere. It wasn't until recently I'd come across this term, but now I see it being used a lot online. Yes, I know what it means. "Cisgender heterosexual" but shortened.

And that's all well and good, but whenever I see it being used it is almost always used in a negative or condescending way. It almost sounds like an insult to me, I'm not sure why.

So my questions for you wonderful people of EC are: What do you think of the term? Do you think it's an unnecessary abbreviation? Do you use it? and if so how often?

I don't love it. I don't love any derogatory shortenings of labels.

Therefore, I see it as social/karmic justice directed at all the people who use terms like homo or tranny (fortunately people haven't yet figured out how to fuck up "bisexual" for purposes of bigotry).

But like most instances of social/karmic justice that is *directed* from one group to another, it inflicts a lot of collateral damage as well as intended damage. Overall, I think it costs the LGBT community far more in lost allies than it gains us in satisfaction against bigots.

But angry people don't tend to think clearly about trade-offs in instances like this. They are hurt and angry, and want to make others hurt and angry.

It's very unlikely I would be interested in talking to anyone who says this

I don't like the term. Transphobes and homophobes use it as an example for how ''intolerant'' LGBT people are. Those who use it are making us look bad, ultimately.

Sounds like tumblr-speak with someone trying to make you feel guilty. Pay it no mind.

I think, as far as abbreviations go, it's a great creation! With that in mind, I deal with a LOT of abbreviations at work. I also have never seen this word used. It seems like a bit of a problem because it essentially assigns cis people to their own category. It's mildly dehumanizing. But other than that I don't see what is wrong with it.

Outside of Tumblr, I can't see using "cishets", except maybe when discussing technical and medical things. And even then, you should probably just say "cisgender" and "heterosexual"!

Doctor: Well, hello Justine. How are you today?
    Me: I'm fine. And you?
Doctor: Just swell! Say, you look awfully pretty today.
Me: Why, thank you, doctor! I really do hope I'm 100% cishet approved.
    Doctor: Cis... het?
Me: Oh, let me fill you in. Like, I'm transbi. The majority of people are cishet.
Doctor: The fuck is a transbi?
Me: YOU UNEDUCATED SWINE! *flips medical table!*

If somebody wants to use it for short hand, when making a point, that's okay I suppose. Just don't be surprised when you're asked to repeat or explain yourself, when you do use it.

I pronounced this as 'kish-ets' - and thought it was going to be a thread about food or something. Oh well.

Well I first thought it was pronounced kiss-hets...

Never come across it, non LGBT is probably a more widely used term for the word, works for me.

    Not a fan.

Fighting against heteronormativity and sexism - yes. Using silly derogatory abbreviations against others that do more harm than good - no.

I'm not really sure how to feel on it. We'll just see where the term goes in the future.

When I first saw the word I mentally read it as cis-shits. That can't be a good sign.

This is where my small-town midwesterner kicks in.

WHAT? I mean....who came up with this? First off, I think that 95% of people in my area would hear "cisgendered heterosexual" and scratch their heads. Obviously I am all about educating, but we've got a long way to go before we can start adding a whole group of silly phrases.

On a side note....if we are so lazy that we have to shorten such a phrase...*face palm*

I don't see the point in using a term that was obviously contrived to be used as an insult. I so rarely even use terms like cis/trans anyhow so I don't see how this term would be of much use to me in my everyday life anyhow. Even if I was ever to be in a situation, such as if I was doing a speech or lecture on the subject, why I would want to use a term like "cishets" when I could just say cisgendered heterosexual. It is scientific, it doesn't sound like an insult and people have an easier time understanding what I am saying.

This sounds like a word to describe the rustling sound of a tulle skirt XD;;; cishet cishet cishet~~

I feel like labels are getting to be really coveted so now everyone is trying to make a label out of everything... but hey, whatever floats your boat, I guess, but, as has been said before, I doubt anyone will know what it means outside of tumblr~
